Finding Adventure In Small Towns

Finding Adventure In Small Towns

I go to a relatively small college in a small town. While I usually love being in a small town, sometimes when it's a weekend and you don't have much homework, you find yourself bored. Without school work to fill in your free time, you're left wondering what you could do, and in a small town, this can sometimes be difficult. There are a few restaurants you could go to, but that is about it.

This past weekend some friends came to visit me and a few of my friends who go to school with me. We didn't want to stay cooped up in our rooms the whole weekend, and since the weather is actually nice now despite it being the middle of winter, we decided to seek out adventure.

The first place we went to were some Kaolin mines. We had the hardest time finding this place. We got lost so many times, stopped to figure out where we were, and drove on so many dirt roads. We drove around for almost 2 hours before finding it, and were actually about to head back to the dorms when we finally found it. The drive there was an adventure enough but we made it just in time to watch the sunset.

The view was amazing. There were so many pinks and purples and oranges in the sky - it was absolutely breathtaking. There was a small lake in the middle of the mines that was turquoise because of the kaolin that had dissolved in it. As crazy as the journey was to get there, the view was definitely worth it.

The next day we went to a bridge right by our campus that has a ton of graffiti and artwork on it. It's cool to see everyone's ideas and look at the drawing and read the quotes. Plus, it's a great place to get a cool Instagram picture.

I had been here once before, but there was still a ton of new artwork on the bridge. I loved looking around at everything and taking pictures of what caught my eye, and most of all, I loved being able to spend time there with my friends.

Today, my friend and I decided to venture out to a small forest near us called Bartram Forest. This forest has super tall yet thin trees that are lined up pretty symmetrically. It's a great place to hang your Eno and just relax in the calmness of nature. There is also a small lake that you could hang out around and have a picnic. The whole forest is just a neat place to relax.

Despite living in a small town, there is always adventure out there. You just have to go in search for it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
