The BEST Places To Study At For UW-Madison Students
Taylor Fabian

As a student, especially a college student, life can get super hectic and you need a place to go do your homework/ study for your upcoming exam--(and sometimes it is just super nice to get out of your dorm or apartment to get stuff done!) During my freshman year, and this year as a sophomore, I have found some gems around campus that you may or may not be familiar with, in which I absolutely love doing my homework and studying at around UW-Madison. Check out my list for finding your potentially new favorite study spot!

p.s: I was super selective for this list, so I could give you my TOP favorite places (which is why this list is relatively short)

1. The Upperhouse

Taylor Fabian

This is located by Lucky Apt and UHS and is hands-down my favorite study spot to do homework and other tasks I need to get done. The space is super open, welcoming, aesthetic, and has the comfiest seating with a bunch of open light and space. Great for independent and group studies. (the picture featured above is my favorite spot to study at, at the upper house--one of many perfect spaces to sit at here)

2. The Student Activity Center (SAC)

The Student Activity Center, also known as the SAC, is literally in the same building/area as the UpperHouse. This area has more tables and desk areas that allow you to work in a group or individual setting away from your typical scene. Super private and inclusive, so you can be the most efficient version of yourself. (the picture above is not a image of the SAC)

3. Helen C. White Library

Again, this picture is clearly not what Helen C White College Library looks like, but it is a library (I tend to not take pictures of the places I am trying to study at, haha). However, I love stopping by Helen C White to get some homework done before classes, or when I need to get some serious work done since it is completely silent here. Also, who does not love the window seat at College Library-- the view is amazing.

4. Memorial Union

Mem. U is the place to go if you need to get some group work done since it is not the quietest environment ever, since anyone around madison comes here to meet up with old friends. I tend to go here with groups, and also in-between classes since there is coffee, ice-cream, and food there--> plus when it is nice out and you want to do work outside, this is the place to go since it is right next to the lake.

5. Starbucks // Grace Coffee & Co.

If you have read any of my past articles, I am an H-U-G-E and A-V-I-D coffee drinker (sorry that was extra). Whenever I need a pick me up to wake up and feel productive I tend to go to either Starbucks or Grace Coffee Co. to get my work done.

Starbucks is really busy, but there is a good amount of seating so you should be able to find a place to sit. Most of the time, Starbucks is typically quiet and a good space for independent or minimal group study. Plus you can get a good cup of coffee to 'accessorize' your subject materials.

Grace Coffee Co. has more limited seating and more of an independent study area, but is still super aesthetic and wait for it.. there is a DOG there!! Uhm I think that is all I have to say because we all need a dog in our life to help us every now and then.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
