I survived my last first week of college... and I'm already realizing that I have little to no motivation left. I've gotten two assignments and I'm already procrastinating as much as possible. But, having been around the block a few times here at Wayne State, I feel like you see some of the same things. Each year experiences things differently, here's how you can see the differences.
Now, the main way to spot a first year is to look to their neck, and see if they are wearing their lanyard from orientation. Some even keep the name tag in it. Now, if they have removed their tag another way to spot them is by watching the people walk to class. Do you see one looking confused, wandering the hallways, wondering why they can't count well enough to find room 221? Well, just remember that was you once and help them, because that first year will be so thankful. You can also spot one by the way they dress for the first day of classes. A senior will opt for the sweats/yogas the first day already accepting that they're not gonna care. A first year can be seen in a fully planned outfit that they laid out the night before. They look really nice, but you know one day their gonna realize that sweats are a wonderful way of life.
It's crazy to think that was me, not too long ago. It doesn't feel like much has changed, but when I look in the mirror, or just sit and think, I realize so much has.
Sophomores can still be seen with a little bit of life in them. They will still try for the first days of classes, but you will see them make the switch to sweats far sooner than a first year. As a first year you join all the clubs that you can so you can meet all the people possible. As a sophomore, you start to realize you don't have enough time to devote to everything. So, you slowly dwindle it down. That was me. I had to make some sacrifices to realize who I wanted to be as a college student. I always kept friends from the clubs I left though, so it all worked out. I still have them no matter how far removed from the club I am.
Junior year is the toughest. Full of upper level credits, trying to keep up with the clubs you have left, and trying to figure where your life is going. Now, you don't figure it out junior year but that's when it's finally in the forefront of your mind. Sweats have taken over and you slowly count down the days to twenty fun (which seems to take forever). If you're like me and you're a youngen your social life dies with each friend that turns twenty one before you, which in my case was all of them.
I don't know what senior year has in store for me, but I know I'm gonna make the most of it. I'm gonna make all the memories I can with some of the best people I have ever met before we all go our separate ways. I don't think I could've picked a better place to have spent four years of my life, and I'm thankful for every experience Wayne State has given me.
So here's to the Class of 2017, let's make this year ours!
