As the best four years of your life come to a close, everything can seem very overwhelming. The year of lasts is guaranteed to be an emotional one, and there’s a lot you need to prepare for once it’s actually all over. Here’s the best advice I can give to the college-bound graduating senior.

1. Focus on school

So you’ve battled the ACT, the college acceptance letters have arrived, and you’re already coordinating the decorations for your dorm. Although it may seem as though you’re practically already a college student, remember that you still have high school to finish. Don’t let the grades that you have worked so hard for these past four slip in the last couple months. Stay focused.

2.Enjoy high school while you still can

Meaning go to prom, partake in spirit days, and get as many signatures as possible in that yearbook. Do something amazing on senior skip day and perfect the senior prank to establish your class legacy. I know you’re itching to get out, but trust me. You’ll miss it.

3.Appreciate your teachers.

Once you get to college, you’ll be exposed to professors that are ONLY there to teach. High school teachers are a special breed; they have supported you and guided you through your entire high school experience. Say thank you, hug them goodbye, and make a promise you’ll visit them next year.

4.Graduation season is breakup season

The sad truth is everyone is pursuing their own paths, and sometimes the people you always thought would be right at your side must tackle their own adventures. Prepare for a lot of heartbreak, even that perfect couple may make a tragic split. You may become distant with some friends too, and that’s okay. Remember that strong friendships can withstand the distance and you will also meet some of the most amazing people in the years to come.

5.Popularity means nothing

As soon as you enter the college world, there is no longer a social hierarchy. Trust me, you will find your place. College is about being an individual, and you will be equal to everyone else.

6.Appreciate your last months of being debt-free.

Soon enough you’ll become very familiar with the terms tuition, FAFSA, and loans. Save up some extra cash and pick up a few hours at work, your future self will thank you.

7.This summer is going to be AMAZING

Attend as many graduation parties, bonfires, and beach days with your friends as possible. You’re going to be attending freshman orientation, experience move-in day, and sign up for your fall classes. Make sure to take a lot of pictures and be as involved as possible. This summer will be filled with a lot of goodbyes, but the memories will be priceless.

8.Tell your parents you love them.

This entire process is very bittersweet to ol’ mom and dad. They watched you grow up and now their forced to let you go. Make sure to give them a lot of hugs and say thank you.

9.It’s totally okay if you have NO IDEA what you’re doing

I know there seems to be so much pressure on you right now, but you’re not alone. Not being committed to a school yet or having an undecided major is completely normal. Just focus on you and pursue what makes you happy, the rest will come naturally.

Best of luck to you, high school senior.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
