I’ve seen a lot lately about the unfortunate circumstances that led to Cecil the Lion’s death. I’ve seen a lot of backlash from people all over the world, but it is what I haven’t seen that disturbs me the most. It's from many of the same people calling out the dentist to “rot in hell” and force his practice to close down. It’s unfortunate that an evil man lured a helpless lion and hit him with a dart to track him, only to kill him later. It’s more unfortunate that almost all of the people, who are so adamant about defending Cecil, often overlook their inhumane treatment of people in their own lives.
Maybe they aren’t that bad, but only standing up for an animal and not your fellow brother or sister, speaks volumes.
If you defended Cecil and condemned Caitlyn Jenner: Congratulations, you are what is wrong with this world. If you defended Cecil and were upset that same sex marriage was legalized: Congratulations, you are what is wrong in this world. If you defended Cecil and have been ignoring the race issues this countries faces: Kudos to you.
Before we look for the humane treatment of animals, it’s imperative to define what "humane" means and even more imperative is to apply that definition in our own lives. What that dentist did was wrong, but making him close his practice, lose his livelihood, and fear of his and his patients’ safety—that’s absurd. His office now has a one star review on yelp because his personal actions totally reflect his professional life. That’s humane? Wishing death upon him and wishing he suffers for the rest of his life. That’s humane?
While I do not condone hunting of exotic animals, the issue is beyond that. It’s ironic how we try to preach humanity, but we all practice our own evil behaviors. It’s time to stop acting like we give a damn about equal treatment and actually start practicing it.
It’s baffling, yet quite beautiful still, that we are able to bind together against a sick human being. But then tread backwards by treating him like vermin for not treating an animal humanely. It’s a wonderful thing to stand up for what you believe in, but all too often we try to voice our opinions to make us look better, and end in the end that is our problem. There are a lot of contradictions we face, but humanely treating animals to inhumanely treating humans is where the problem lies.
So, before you discredit someone for his actions, maybe you should look at yourself and determine whether you are as great as you want this other guy to be. I can guarantee you you’re not, so why waste energy chastising someone else when you can't do better yourself? Bringing light to an issue is important, and I hope to continue see people standing up for their beliefs, but I do not care for those who refuse to treat everyone the same before treating an animal on the same level as a human being.
