Embracing Your Inner Nerd

A Short Inspiration in the Heroic Voice

Embracing Your Inner Nerd

I was always told that being a girl meant wearing pink, reading magazines, and obsessing over cute guys. Well, I strayed a bit from the norm, and when I say a bit, I mean I traveled another galaxy. I am the girl with books pilling over books and superhero shirts galore. My timelines consist of superheroes, tattoos, and quotes. The best part is that I am just being me. I do not fit into any certain stereotype, but here is why being a nerdy girl is good, no matter what people think.

If you are like me, then you always have a book with you, so can always talk about the characters with someone who has read it and debate themes. Books become even more debatable once a film or television show is made based on the book. Then you can compare and contrast the book and the film. You can also ruin the movie for anyone who tries to watch it with you, because you will be pointing out all the differences from the book, or you will quote the entire film ad nauseum. Either way, it keeps you entertained!

There is an unlimited amount of movies that are being released if you are into superheroes. The DC universe is in constant competition with the Marvel universe, and for those of you who may not be as nerdy, that is like saying Batman versus Iron Man. Marvel is spitting out new superhero films faster than I can keep up, and if you miss one, you will be slightly lost when watching the next film. DC is finally stepping up to the plate with something other than the brilliant "The Dark Knight Trilogy".

"Batman vs. Superman" is going to be the big bust-out film for the DC universe, as it introduces audiences to the Justice League. The hype for superhero films is unreal, and if you keep up with them, then you will always have a reason to go to the movies!

There are so many more nerdoms (a kingdom without a king, just a group of nerds loving the same thing) out there that they are impossible to count. You have your wizards waiting to get into Hogwarts, the travelers going on adventures in Middle Earth, the Trekkies wanting to get lost in space, and the ones waiting to fall down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. The truth is, you are not alone.

There are nerds for almost everything. I guarantee you will find someone who loves Spider-Man, or any other superhero, just as much as you. Embrace your inner nerd. Being nerdy is a great thing! So call for your dragons, bring out your wand, or put on your cape, because this could be the rise of the nerds!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
