I was scrolling through Facebook this weekend and stumbled upon an article by The Daily Beast entitled “Blame Millennials for Donald Trump.”
*Insert gasp and jaw drop here*
Now normally, I can scroll past these “millennials are ruining the world and you’re a bunch of selfish, entitled brats who know nothing and are destroying everything” articles because I know reading them will just set me off on a 20 minute rant to my boyfriend on how tired I am of being blamed for problems I have nothing to do with, but I just had to read this one.
It was as predictably absurd and frustrating as you can imagine, with millennials being nailed to the wall and criticized for choosing to support candidates they believe in. Namely, third party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein.
The author, in my favorite backwards and asinine quote of the article says, “But there’s something deeper, and darker, about millennial opposition to Clinton and the attendant blitheness toward the prospect of a Trump presidency. It’s best described as a mix of moral relativism, historical ignorance, and narcissism.”
Slow clap for The Daily Beast publishing an article that in the first few paragraph totally alienates and infuriates their target audience.
Moral relativism, historical ignorance and my personal favorite, narcissism. Are we serious here? Aren’t you all tired of calling millennials ignorant and narcissistic?
And let me just be totally clear here, the reason millennials are being called these things in this instance is because we are choosing to use our political power and choice to support candidates we believe in.
You still with me here? The author is yelling at us for participating in the political process because he’s mad we aren’t voting along party lines.
I don’t know about you fellow millennials, but I’m sick and tired of the two party system. It doesn't work, it limits other voices from being heard (cough Johnson not being in the September debates despite being on the ballot in all 50 states, polling in the double digits in many states, and polling at 8.4% nationally cough).
And the two party system has saddled us with this sideshow of an election.
I feel so bad for the countless 18 year olds who get to vote for the first time this year. They have been dealt such a rotten hand: here pick between this insane, racist bigot and this entrenched politician.
What kind of a choice is that?
And with these options, there is seriously exasperated frustration and disbelief at millennials going third party?
I’ll level with everyone here, I’m a registered Democrat but after watching the mess that has been the 2016 election with Clinton and Trump going at each other relentlessly, I quickly became totally disenfranchised with my party. I ended up wandering aimlessly looking for someone who was actually talking about the issues instead of going after the other candidate.
(I personally found that in Gary Johnson. I find myself identifying with this libertarian because I believe he will make the best president. And I want to support someone I 100% believe in. This is my personal choice and I’m proud of it.)
Anyway, the author in the “Blame Millennials for Donald Trump” article says that we are historically ignorant. But I think he’s actually the one displaying his historical ignorance.
Let me explain.
President Obama was elected in 2008 and his biggest support group? Citizens between the ages of 18-32. No shock there if you know your modern American history. Obama won the election because he was different. He spoke differently about politics. He leveled with the American people. He gave us hope in the midst of a mess.
He was elected again in 2012. The biggest group of supporters? Yep. You guessed it. 18-29 year olds.
It’s funny how millennials are inspired by people they believe can change the world, huh?
And don’t even start an argument with me about how Obama hasn’t changed the world.
Let’s see: health care reform, Wall Street reform, elimination of Osama Bin Laden, repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, gay marriage legalized, started the shutdown of Guantanamo, ended the war in Iraq, turned around the economy, decreased unemployment, etc. etc. The list goes on and on and on.
So yeah. He changed the world. (Insert Obama “not bad” face meme here)
I sarcastically ask you to “forgive” millennial voters for throwing support behind candidates like Gary Johnson, Jill Stein and Bernie Sanders. We just see something in them that we don’t see in Clinton or Trump.
We see people who have a legitimate care about fixing the very real problems we see in the United States today. Things like the increasing national debt, the astronomical cost of college education, the crushing debt so many are under from their school loans, the increased violence against the LGBTQ community, the African American community, the Muslim community, the Hispanic community and so many others.
At the end of the day, we are actually taking ownership of the right we have as citizens to vote for the president of our United States of America. We will not be bullied into voting within the two party system just because that system allowed for this farce of an election.
So don’t you dare blame us for Trump. Or Clinton. Or the sorry state of American politics. We’ve only voted in two presidential elections. Two. And guess what? The same guy won both times.
Trump is not our fault. He is the fault of the now very loud, ignorant and racist America that millennials have been trying to distance themselves from ever since we realized how twisted their world view was.
Don’t you dare tell us how to vote either. We will vote for whoever we believe is the best candidate for the job of running our country. You know. Like you’re supposed to.
So don’t be surprised if you wake up the morning after election day and find yourself with a third party president. You are awakening a giant in angry millennials, and the last time that happened we elected the first African American President.
You’ve been warned.
