Different Types Of Students

Have you ever noticed a difference in students in the classroom?

Are there any differences of students in a class? When does one ever notice that while taking classes? When looking around a classroom one might come up with different ways students act. The three types of students in a classroom are the overachievers, the maintainers, and the show ups.

When looking around the classroom, someone can easily pick out the over achievers. They are normally the ones with their notebook perfectly planned out, they have a multitude of different highlighters on hand, different colored pens to ‘jazz’ up their notes, and the book opened to the exact spot stated in the syllabus. An overachiever is always prepared for class and then some -- they tend to have done the homework, have a bunch of questions that go along with the reading, and are always ready to answer when a teacher has a question. For some overachievers, this is their favorite class, so they want to make sure they get everything possible out of it. For others, it is their way to get the best grade possible, but since they are overthinking and studying, all of their time tends to go to waste because they panic and start to freak out. Lastly, the overachiever who is just trying to be the teacher’s pet, to one up everyone in the class, and be the one who is perfect. Sadly most of the time they intimate the other students.

Has one ever taken notice to the students in the classroom -- whether they have their notebook out ready to go take notes, nothing else just a notebook and pen? These students are the maintainers. Surprisingly enough these are the students who tend to get the better grades. They do their homework just how a teacher wanted it done, with no extras or fancy add-ons. These students know when they are ready for a test and they do not over study, over think, or panic because they know that they are going to ace it. The students who maintain and do what they need to do in the class end up being the ones who know the answer in class but do not raise their hand because of the overachievers, but they will look at you when you ask it and not put their head down and try to hide from getting called on. If the teacher would tend to call on these students more often they would be surprised by how much they know.

Last but not least are the show ups. These students show up for class, and that is it. They may take notes, or draw in their notebook, or write down comments, or just sit in the room and stare at the teacher the whole time. Some of these students are actually pretty smart, but they will not show it to anyone, but then some of them do not care. They do not want to be in the class, they just want to go back to their house, dorm, or wherever else they want to be. When asked a question, most of the students will try to hide, and when called on will make a funny remark, while others will straight up stare at the teacher.

While thinking about students three types show up, the overachievers, the maintainers, and the show ups. Each student is different in their own unique way, but do not underestimate any one of them they can actually be quite the opposite. Look for them the next time one walks into a classroom and see if one is able to pick them out. Also remember one thing, though, do not judge a book by its cover or in this case a student by how they act in class.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
