Dear '8 AMer'

Why?

You did it again, you crazy human being. And what is funny is that you actually believed that this would be beneficial for you. Do you know yourself? I bet you are regretting this already, aren't you? That's right; you signed up for 8 AM classes. Why? That is a terrific question. What were you thinking? Another great thing to ask. Have you ever in your life been a morning person? Exactly, so what made you think that waking up at 7 AM and hauling yourself into a classroom was a good idea?

We aren't in high school anymore. You don't have to be at school at 8 AM. Seriously, why would you put yourself through this? Remember all of those times you complained in high school? Did you think this would be different? The worst part is that no one even forced you to take this 8 AM. You are the only person to blame in this situation. It's only been one week, but I bet a 10 AM sounds almost thrilling to you right now.

Maybe it hasn't been that bad for you yet, but just wait. We already know that you have never gone to sleep at a reasonable time. You are in for some delirious days that are the aftermath of five hours of sleep. But, being loopy and waking up at 7 AM is not the only rude awakening that you will experience. Did you forget that cold weather is just around the corner? It's not an easy thing to wake up before the sun, and it is definitely not easy to part from your bed with the knowledge that you are about to face the cold. You can't take your bed to class with you, unfortunately.

But hey, there are some positive things about 8 AMs. For one, your day probably ends before most people's days end. That means that you can come home and take a nap while they are heading out for their first class of the day. It also means that you can decide how to spend your day - (if you don't end up napping through all of it.) Don't be hard on yourself if that happens -- napping is very important and you deserve it. Waking up early also means that you get a real life parking spot. Parking usually sucks, but not for you. Obviously, the sane people will not be pulling up into that parking lot at such an unholy hour. You don't have to go around campus for 20 minutes impatiently awaiting someone to leave because you are one of the first people there.

So yes, there are a few upsides to waking up early, (even if the downsides make it hard to appreciate them.) You might as well get used to this new schedule because there is no turning back now. It's too late to change your schedule as of Wednesday. But, look at it this way, at least you will be suffering along with me and the other delusional students that thought this could be good for them. And, who knows! Maybe you will be a morning person by the end of this semester.

By the way, that was a joke.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
