After 20 years of calling this wonderful state my home, I can honestly say there is no place like it. I have witnessed some of the prettiest sunsets, felt some of the hottest heat and seen some of the most unique landscapes this state has to offer. With summer right around the corner, vacationing is where everybody’s mind is currently residing. For college students like me, the weeks leading up to the end of the school year involve stress, minimal hours of sleep, and unbelievable amounts of caffeine. By the time finals have finished getting the best of us, we’ll take whatever break we can get. For the people who waited until the last minute to plan memorable trips or those who managed to drain their bank accounts a few days into spring break (sorry, not sorry), no worries! Here are some of my favorite trips that are sure to be a good time without doing major damage to your wallet.
Balmorhea State Park -- Located in Balmorhea, Texas, one of the largest springs in the world is best known for its 80 year-old natural swimming pool as well as its ability to remain between 70 and 75 degrees year round. This state park is a good destination for those looking to get a tan, as well as those who are trying to get out of town. Round up some friends, grab your floats and head out for a cool, refreshing dip!
Guadalupe Mountains National Park -- For all of my fellow hikers, if you’re looking for a challenge, you’ve got one. Located in the mountains of West Texas, this eight mile long hike is exhausting but very much worth it. It is considered one of the highest peaks in Texas and takes roughly six to eight hours to complete. Expect a beautiful, breathtaking view as well as a hungry stomach and sore legs.
Marfa Lights -- Located in Marfa, Texas, a town with a population no larger than a couple thousand people, lies a mystery that kept generations questioning for years. The mystical glowing orbs that only appear a few times throughout the year are sure to leave you curious and in awe. If the sound of this doesn’t pique much interest, Marfa also homes the infamous Marfa PRADA display as well as a few restaurants that have some of the best chips and salsa in all of West Texas.
Monahan’s Sandhills -- You may be wondering why I’m even mentioning this destination, considering we Texans eat and breathe blowing dirt on the daily, but you’d be surprised at how popular this place is. For $4 a day, you can bring out your horses, four wheelers and dirt bikes for riding! Equipment rentals are available, as well as picnicking areas and camping spots. Gallons of sunscreen and infinite water bottles are definitely a recommendation!
Dublin Dr. Pepper Museum -- Yes, we have a museum dedicated to the making and distribution of Texas’s favorite soda (because nothing pisses us off more than having someone recommend Pepsi as a substitute, am I right?) This 120-year-old soda shop has been producing Dr. Pepper using the purest cane sugar since its opening in 1906. If you're passing through, make sure to stop in for an original bottle of their freshest pop!
Palo Duro Canyon -- I would highly recommend taking on this popular hiking spot before taking on the great Guadalupe’s steep trails. This canyon has some of the greenest and most scenic views to offer and is a very good beginner hike for those looking for a breathe of fresh air instead of a full body workout.
Of course, this is only a selected handful of what Texas has to offer, and I’m looking forward to exploring new places in the future. If you get the opportunity this summer, go check these places out for yourself -- or even better, go out and discover your own favorite places!
