11 Things I Learned From Dance Team

11 Things I Learned From Dance Team
Elizabeth Bowerman

Dance team has been a big part of my life. Throughout my years of dance, I have learned so many things along the way. Here are 11 of them:

1. Never miss a practice.

The smallest things can make a huge difference. It's the details that turn a good team into a great team.

2.The best memories come from the hardest practices.

The hard days make the next days feel a little bit easier.

3. Trust your teammates no matter what.

Your teammates want the best for the team just like you do. Believe in them instead of tearing them down. This creates an undeniable bond that will show within the performances and allow each dancer to think of their own job while knowing their teammates are doing the same thing.

4. Don't be afraid to speak up.

If there is a problem within the team, it's almost guaranteed that you are not the only one feeling that way. Go straight to the source and address the problem head on. If you ignore the problem, it will continue to grow and could lead to other problems within the team.

5. Thank your coaches for that extra full-out.

Your coaches know whether it is needed or not, they want the best for you and the team. Trust them throughout every decision because they will not lead you in the wrong direction.

6. There will always be someone better than you.

Watch other dancers. Pick up their good habits and let them inspire you to be more like them instead of simply wishing you could be them.

7. You will mess up.

Even the best dancers will make a mistake. Don't beat yourself up about it, but learn from your mistake and don't allow it to happen again.

8. A positive attitude is everything.

Negativity spreads like wildfire. With a positive attitude, everything becomes easier and more fun. Cheer for your teammates and support them whether they are having a great day or a tough day.

9. There is a difference between constructive criticism and just criticism.

Constructive criticism is essential to the success of the team. Both the best and the weakest dancers will receive plenty of criticism, and without it, the team would not be successful. Don't be offended when you receive well-intentioned criticism along with the fact that you shouldn't be afraid to give it out.

10. Someone will always not like you.

Whether it's your style, technique, or choreography, there will always be someone who doesn't like it. Accept that fact and move past it. Dance is about expressing yourself and who you are not about the opposing opinions.

11. Learn from people before you, yet accept new ideas.

Dance is both an art and a sport that is constantly changing. While listening to the advice of people that came before you, accept new ideas to adapt to the changes within the dance world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
