The Countdown…

It’s that time of year again: Internships are beginning to end, the kids you nanny are starting to feel like your own, and your hometown bar isn’t quite enough to keep you entertained anymore.

August has finally arrived, and with it the final countdown until August 25th, when Miami students will walk past the singing bell towers to class… only to think of what song they will sing at Karaoke night.

I don’t know about you, but here’s what I am counting down to these next 25 days:

25. Having your entire chapter meet for the first time, and not hear anything over the giggles and whispers of sisters catching up.

24. Calling my big immediately after to tell her all the juicy gossip.

23. Being able to wear all of my Greek apparel after a summer away.

22. Having “22” by Taylor Swift being played at every 22-year-old’s birthday party, even though they wish they were turning 21 again

21. Hosting my best friend’s 21st birthday party, and then giving that honor away to the next pledge class.

20. Dividend salads.

19. Concerts at Brick Street, even if they are on Wednesdays.

18. The look on freshmen’s faces when they enter New Bar for the first time.

17. Bagel & Deli.

16. Hearing “Turn Down For What” at 8 a.m. at Armstrong.

15. Taking advantage of the new rules and tailgating at football games.

14. GREEK WEEK!

13. Going to see the Miami Misfitz to cheer on one of my closest friends, which also turns into a sisterhood event because everyone just loves acapella.

12. Singing the Dixie Chicks at Karaoke night.

11. Dancing to the Dixie Chicks at Country night.

10. Getting Will’s and/or Bruno’s Pizza after those respected nights.

9. A nine-credit hour work load for senior year. (hard work every other year pays off)

8. Dinner parties and wine nights with my best friends.

7.  Sushi Nara, SoHi, Skippers, and Starbucks.

6. Parties that leave you covered in foam, peanut shells, or remnants of a toga.

5. Thursday’s at 45.

4. Ordering Wild Bistro on a lazy day and watching Grey’s Anatomy instead of studying.

3. The traditional Saturday routine (our clocks are always broken...).

2. Getting a new planner for the school year.

1. Spending my last year with my best friends and enjoying every second of it.

Within the next weeks, we will all be twiddling our thumbs, waiting for that special week when we all trail our hopes, dreams, summer stories, and new clothes back to Oxford and into our perfect, little bubble.

What are you counting down for?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
