Confessions of a Fast-Food Employee

Shout out to all those rude customers we get and the few nice ones.

Culver's

I've worked at my local Culver's for well over a year and there are some things I'd like to share with you. Even though many don't consider Culver's a "fast-food" joint, it does have a drive-thru and our goal is fast service while maintaining hospitality and quality products. Being an employee at Culver's has made me realize a whole lot about people and customer service skills. But to the consumers out there I'd like to share a few things...

1. Custard >>> Ice Cream

Firstly, Culver's serves frozen custard, not ice cream. But we won't correct you on that because it happens so often. The difference between the two is that custard has a smoother, creamier texture because of the egg yolks and butterfat content. Plus custard is served at a slightly higher temperature.

2. Sometimes the order is wrong because you ordered it wrong.

We'll admit that sometimes we make mistakes. That's okay, we're human. But when a customer orders something a certain way then complains about it being wrong? We get just a little frustrated by that.

3. If you bring your dog in the drive through we will love you.

Most of us work long hours so seeing a dog in that time is just about the greatest thing in the world. At my local branch, we even have dog biscuits at the ready!

4. A pint of custard is the same amount as a 'regular' concrete mixer.

The Culver's I work at does a weekly special where pints are only $2. It's actually cheaper those days the get a pint rather than a concrete or a sundae for that matter.

5. If you come through the drive through just know we can hear everything. I mean everything...

Whether you are talking on the phone, screaming at your kids, or belting lyrics to your favorite song, if you are at the speaker we can hear it all.

6. Girls in the drive through do not want to be hit on.

Talking about the drive through... some of my worst work experiences have happened here. Girls working the drive through don't get enough credit for dealing with customers hitting on them, asking for their numbers, or just being creepy. Our smiling faces and hospitality are just part of our jobs.

7. If you order right away when we open or when we are almost close don't expect the fastest service.

While our main priority is always the customer, sometimes we have other things that need to get done. During the immediate open or soon to be closed hours just know your order will take a little bit longer.

8. Please don't complain about prices

At Culver's we don't have a dollar menu. Just because we are fast food doesn't mean we are cheap. If you want high-quality products you'll have to pay just a little extra.

9. Lemon Ice is a summer only thing.

Lemon ice is the stickiest, sweetest treat Culver's offers. We don't serve this all year long, though. So if you're a sucker for it get it while it's hot outside.

10. We are not you parents, don't leave a mess.

Our dining room inside the restaurant is often monitored by someone cleaning. While we're there to clean the tables and take your empty trays please be courteous. It's okay if you spill a little soda, but please don't leave the place looking like a tornado went through it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
