What a lot of people do not realize is that words are everything. It is honestly something I struggle with myself. There's so many good things as well as bad things about communicating. In today's society, texting is a main priority. I think it's taken way too seriously by this generation, to be honest. One of the main things it has done for me is open the door to so many complications, and I hate that. We strive on who's going to text first, or 'omg do not even think about double texting him.' Honestly—who cares? I've definitely learned the hard way that those things do not matter at all, if I care about you I will probably quadruple text you and not feel ashamed one bit. There's no reason for this generation of girls to be ashamed or not confident because of something so silly as to texting.
One thing I have had to control is not letting texting ruin my verbal communication skills. And I think it is actually difficult in a lot of ways. Words hurt, and it is so easy to let them fly out without even thinking first. I feel like there's so many people that can talk about certain things through text messages that they can't in person. Here's my thing: what are they going to do when the real world hits them and they have no choice anymore?
There's a few verses I came across that really helped me a lot with this topic. #1 being, "My tongue directs where I'm going." (James 3:3-4) Meaning everything that comes out of our mouths lead to the direction that conversation is going, and it is so easy to lead it south so quickly. #2 is "My tongue can destroy what I have." (James 3:6) I also feel like I've learned the hard way that the easiest way to destroy something good is by words. It's sad how was it is to not communicate correctly, or not tell someone how you feel, or not communicate at all for that matter and give someone the impression you do not want them having at all. #3 is "My tongue displays who I am." (Matthew 12:37) This statement could not be any more true or self explanatory. My generation needs to take it and plant it so far into our heads.
There's three things I know that can change these things for the greater good if they are not going so well for you and your life, and they fit so perfectly with these verses. Before your tongue directs where you are going, simply just pause. Before your tongue destroys what you have, ponder. And before your tongue displays who you are, pray.
