Modern Mrs. Darcy's Reading Challenge 2016

It's confession time: I love reading. Addition: I am obsessed with books. Writing this from my library (some say “bedroom,” but let's be honest, there are far more books in here than there are beds), I sit surrounded by stacks that are equal part Jane Austen and Alice Walker.

Relevance: Thanks to one of my favorite blogs, Modern Mrs. Darcy, I've found the perfect reading challenge to satisfy my inner bookworm this year. And I'm inviting you to rise to the challenge with me!

For those who follow the lovely and witty Modern Mrs. Darcy, you'll know she hosts an annual reading challenge. The rules of the challenge are simple: There are 12 categories for 12 months, one book a month. The categories (shown below) are open enough to allow you the freedom to customize your year of book-reading glory to suit your tastes and interests.

What I love most about the Modern Mrs. Darcy's challenge is the healthy balance of material; it gives me a chance to catch up on the books I've been meaning to read/know I should have already read, while it also encourages me to expand my reading horizons with categories like “a book published this year” and “a book recommended by local librarian/bookseller.”

For the month of January, I chose the category “a book you've been meaning to read,” diving deep into the hearts of a book thief, an accordion player, a Jewish fist fighter, and a boy with lemon hair in Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief" (2013).

Next month, I'm all set to read "Things Fall Apart" (1958) by Chinua Achebe for the “a book published before you were born” category. A revolutionary postcolonial text, Achebe's novel changed the way both Westerners and Africans viewed the history of the continent before British imperialism. While I chose "The Book Thief" because of my passion for both postmodernist and World War Era texts, I chose "Things Fall Apart" because the novel's history and subject matter are foreign to me. Choosing Achebe's book for the challenge is the perfect opportunity for me to push my literary boundaries.

For other nifty book ideas, you can check out the Modern Mrs. Darcy's 2016 list here.

Think you're up to the challenge? Choose your books, begin your reading, and participate in the challenge across social media platforms with the hashtags #MMDchallenge and #MMDreading, and MMDarcy's instagram @annebogel.

So, what books will you choose?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
