A fun fact for y'all: Taylor Swift's debut album was the first CD I ever owned. For the past 10 years, I have been finding ways to relate to TSwift's lyrics. What better way to parallel her lyrics to college life than to take them out of context? This is the first of five installments.
Taylor Swift (2006)
1. "And then the time we woke up to find that summer gone" -Tim McGraw
Back to school. It happens every year, around the same time. However, sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the summer glow of things only to see that it's time to get back to academic responsibilities. This is also the time to set those new semester resolutions: a higher grade point average, a lesser amount of procrastination, a solid social life, etc.
2. "State the obvious, I didn't get my perfect fantasy" -Picture to Burn
A new semester means a new class schedule and as the world would have it, you can't always get the perfect lineup. Whether your day consists of back to back classes or three hour night classes, it's gotta be done one way or another.
3. "Drew walks by me, can he tell that I can't breathe?" -Teardrops on my Guitar
If there's anything that makes class a bit more bearable, it's having a cute guy to interact with, or at the very least, inconspicuously stare at.
4. "I don't know what I want so don't ask me 'cause I'm still trying to figure it out." -A Place in This World
Same, Taylor, same.
5. "Oh what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day." -Cold As You
We've all been there; it's been a great day and you're just chilling with a perfect glass of chocolate milk. Then, you hear your phone ding. It's a notification from Blackboard. Your exam grade is in.
Enough said.
6. "I didn't read between the lines" -The Outside
Upon reflection, the syllabus didn't fully warn you of the test's difficulty, but now you know. Better late than never.
7. "You're tied together with a smile, but you're coming undone." -Tied Together With a Smile
Midterms are nearing and all of your friends are wondering how you're so put together. Little do they know that you have three exams next week and no motivation to study.
8. "And don't you know, you're really gonna be someone" -Stay Beautiful
Sometimes those pep talks can completely turn your day around. Keep your eye on the prize!
9. "You should've said no, baby and you might still have me" -Should've Said No
"Me" being a decent sleep schedule. But no, no, no, staying out late is definitely always worth it. *cue nervous, sleep-deprived laughter*
10. "Two A.M. riding in your truck" -Mary's Song (Oh My My My)
Even though you're exhausted, would your lame, curfew-following high school self really blame you for staying out late with a total cutie? Yeah, didn't think so. Go you!
11. "I was walking up the front porch steps after everything that day" -Our Song
And now look at you, you've made it through your day with little sleep and you functioned just fine! Now go take that nap! You've earned it.
12. "You drive me crazy half the time" -I'm Only Me When I'm With You
@ Professors who assign all the assignments to be due at the same time
@ Roommates who interrupt your sleep (see, you might as well stay out anyway)
@ The boy who you think likes you, but maybe not, but maybe yes
13. "And all I think about is how to make you think of me and everything that we could be" -Invisible
You and your GPA could be great. Some hard work and effort and you're looking at The Dean's List.
14. "Why would you wanna break a perfectly good heart?" -A Perfectly Good Heart
Nothing says heartbreak like an 8am final on a Saturday. Or three finals in one day.
Luckily, no matter how hard the semester gets, it all comes to an end (until next semester, at least).
Stay tuned for part two!
