On July 16th, Clemson University decided to make some major changes and implement stricter regulations on Greek Life.
The changes are supposed to provide "a culture of safety, rules, compliance and accountability among its fraternity and sorority chapters, with specific strategies aimed at eliminating hazing, alcohol abuse, sexual misconduct and biased actions," according to Greenville SC News and Weather.
In a press release on the matter, Almeda Jacks, vice president for student affairs, said, “We believe that student clubs and organizations enhance the undergraduate experience and have a positive role to play on campus. However, we have zero tolerance for behavior, either by individuals or organizations, that jeopardizes the health and safety of students, negatively impacts academic performance, violates our anti-discrimination policy or degrades the value of a Clemson degree and the institution’s reputation."
According to Greenville local news, the new rules include:
1. Fraternities and sororities will no longer be allowed to purchase alcohol for events. Events must be bring-your-own-beer or contracted to third-party vendors.
2. Chapters must hire more security for events, limit the number of non-member guests and record who is in attendance.
3. Rush and recruitment events will be alcohol-free and drinking games are banned for all social events. No alcohol will be permitted at any new member activities such as “bid nights” or initiation activities.
4. Chapters that break the rules will be subject to penalties, including probation or suspension of the chapter.
With all of these new changes, many students are wondering what the new school year will hold and how these new rules will affect their involvement with Greek Life.
