A Christian's Apology To The LBGT Community

I'm sorry for how my religion has been treating you.

I am a Christian. I am well aware that I state that in almost every single article that I write and submit, but I feel that making that fact about myself very clear when writing is important, as I sometimes have some opinions that may not be what’s considered the ‘norm’ for other Christians. But does that make what I think wrong without question? Does that entail that I will, even though I have been saved, go to hell, simply because I don’t share the same opinion as other Christian people on certain issues in today’s world? Of course not! But, unfortunately, some people don’t think that way. So, with that being said, if you are someone who is absolutely, positively, dead-against loving and supporting the LBGT community, you may turn back and stop reading now.

Where I myself am not a part of the LGBT community, I find it extremely sad that some members of the Christian community, the religion of which I identify myself with, has turned its back on the people who are in the LGBT community in such an ugly way, using verses in the book of Leviticus (specifically Lev. 18:22 and Lev. 20:13) as their only biblical evidence. Both verses describe being gay as being an ‘abomination’, punishable by death. But I think that we as Christians are missing something here; being gay isn’t the only abomination that the Bible speaks against. Proverbs 6:16-19 says, “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” ALL sin is an abomination to God. Sin is like skyscrapers-from our view, some may look taller than others, but from a bird’s eye view, they all look the same. When we see one sin as being worse than another, God sees all sin the same way. So before Christians should even begin to think that they have the right to judge based on what they think that person or group of people have done that they don’t necessarily approve of, they need to consider that, in God’s eyes, they have sin(s) that are just as bad. If you don’t believe me or understand me, go to your bible and read about judging your brothers and sisters in Christ in Matthew 7:3-5.

A Christian’s job is to share and show love to everyone, even if you may not necessarily share the same lifestyle. 1 John 4:7 says, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” Jesus says to love everyone, regardless of who they are or what their lifestyle is like, but I have observed that we as Christians don’t always have that principle close to heart. What would the world be like if Christ, who is the epitome of loving everyone, had decided to only love and save certain groups of people that he liked instead? We would all be in very big trouble, wouldn’t we? So, why do we feel a need to pick and choose who we are kind to? Why do we feel the need go as far as to label the members of the LGBT community as being freaks or animals or even unworthy of love, when Christ specifically tells us to be good to and open our hearts to everyone?

As a Christian, my heart is breaking for the LGBT community today. I'm sorry for how my people have been treating you, and I promise that you won't find that kind of attitude coming out of this Christian. I firmly believe that we as a Christian people made a serious mistake in expressing so much hatred toward the LGBT individuals, and if we don’t change things soon and show more love than what we do, things could go very badly. It is so sad when I hear my LGBT friends at Lindsey Wilson say that they no longer attend church or are even afraid to attend church, because they know that someone will have a hateful comment to make or will give off a very bad vibe. Aren’t we supposed to instead be drawing people closer to a relationship with God? That, my friends, starts off by making people feel welcome in His house. I am honestly ashamed of how some Christians are acting today in this matter, and I strongly feel that this kind of behavior from our religious group needs to stop, and stop now.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
