As a young adult, I can safely say that a number of us enjoy drinking from time to time. Whether it’s a mimosa at brunch, a beer at an ale house, or too many vodka cranberries at a nightclub, 20-something’s everywhere will occasionally let loose and enjoy a drink or two... or more.
We also find solace in knowing some of our favorite celebrities enjoy the same thing now and again. Take Chrissy Teigen, for instance. The model and well-beloved social media icon has openly talked about drinking on her Twitter page and shared photos of her enjoying booze while at an awards show with her husband John Legend. There’s comfort in knowing that she also has a fun night.
Or, that she used to anyway.
In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Teigen admitted that she is now cutting back on alcohol consumption. Citing her family’s history of alcoholism, she admits that she’s “not the type of person that can have just one drink.” She references a recent trip to Bali as the main factor behind her decision to cut booze, and said that she feels amazing by working out and eating healthier instead of enjoying glasses of wine.
Twitter trolls, unsurprisingly, have not been kind about Teigen’s decision. Some have thrown insults her way regarding her appearance and political affiliations. Others have said that she speaks out about issues the way that a drunk person would. She has spoken out on Twitter about the hate that has been tossed her way, saying, “I dunno how you can be this mean.” Quite frankly, I don’t know how either. I’ve never been a fan of online trolls, and often wonder how boring their lives must be to have to insult someone else online and get a kick out of it.
I personally admire how she is handling herself and trying to better her life. Drinking is something that I don’t necessarily love doing, but enjoy from time to time. Usually I can have one drink and call it good, but other times I overdo it and, like Teigen, end up embarrassing myself in front of people I care about or admire. She said it isn’t a good look on herself or her family, and that’s something I agree with.
But as someone who has alcoholism on both sides of her family, I also have to admire how she’s trying to fix her bad habits. I’ve never understood how getting drunk is enjoyable, but I have seen how quickly it can consume its victims. It isn’t an easy habit to break period, but she wants to break it while being in the public eye and I think that makes it an even harder task. Now the public will be watching to see if she sticks to it, and I’m hoping she has the willpower to do so.
It takes a lot of courage to admit you have a problem when it comes to drinking. It takes even more courage to do something about the problem. Chrissy Teigen has done both and is working toward a healthier lifestyle, which is something everyone should admire. Put aside your political views and your personal feelings toward her, and realize that she’s doing something to better herself.
