Everyone makes resolutions for the new year, but how important are these resolutions? Do we only make these resolutions to make ourselves feel better when really, we are the same frickin person we were on December 31? Can people really change or do we just give ourselves and others the illusion that we have changed? I hope that people can change, for the better but sometimes they change for the worse.
Resolutions are good because they force us to try to be better, but how long do we really follow through on them? On January 1, gyms and dating websites and diet plans all see a spike in enrollment because people want to try to make the new year their best one yet, but in 2 weeks, these people are going to be back to their same old selves.

No matter how much you try, you really can’t avoid being your true self. We are who we are, for the good and the bad, and we can try to change small things about ourselves, but in the end, we are the same core person we have always been. Don’t try to make big, hard resolutions and feel pressure to follow through on them. You should make a small resolution every single day to be a better version of yourself, not a different one. In reality, we should not think that we can only make resolutions on New Year’s Day; we can make resolutions at any time of the year because we should be striving to be the best 365 days a year, not just on the first day of the year.

So what’s the point? What’s the point in making goals we know we will give up on a few weeks later? The point is to make yourself happy. Make yourself happy by setting goals, big or small, so that you really can try to be better in the new year. Make yourself and others happy, and you will have no need for any sort of resolutions. We can’t change others and sometimes we can’t even change ourselves, but we can control our reactions and actions, so make this year a happy one with or without the dumb resolutions.
