Hoes before bros. Uteruses before duderuses. Ovaries before brovaries.
Galentine’s Day, coined by "Parks and Recreation" character Leslie Knope, is a holiday for women, by women, celebrated on the eve of Valentine’s Day. We have embraced this holiday ever since we first heard about it. What could be better than a day spent with our favorite female friends, celebrating us and our accomplishments? Food, fun, friends—and NO men. Here are my tips for creating the best event on your college budget.
Think decorations.
For decorations, you don’t have to go all-out, but you can find what you need at a dollar store. Red and pink balloons; red, pink, and white streamers; heart-shaped confetti; construction paper. Make your own paper chains, hang paper hearts from the ceiling—Galentine’s Day only happens once a year, so you might as well go all out! You can also craft during your celebration and display your artwork around the apartment/dorm.
Next, music.
You need some music inspired by strong women, songs that will inspire and empower you and your gal pals. Here are sixteen of the best girl power anthems for your Galentine’s Day soundtrack.
Hungry? Potluck brunch.
Holding a potluck brunch saves you the hassle of purchasing and preparing all of the food. Have someone bring a waffle maker if you don’t have one, someone else bring waffle mix, then bacon, orange juice, fruit, and anything else you want to have for your brunch! It will be even more fun to prepare it all together.
Need a little R & R? Spa Day.
Having a spa day celebration can be easy, cheap, and fun if you stay at home and have a DIY spa day. You can do facials, manicures and pedicures, deep conditioning treatments, and more. You can make various body scrubs, lotions, and bubble baths from common household items, which could be good favors for your friends to take home with them.
What’s a Galentine’s Day without a movie night?
If your Galentine’s Day event goes on into the night, there are so many chick flicks and romantic comedies to choose from on Netflix! "The Best of Me," "Stuck in Love," "13 Going on 30" (holy throwback to middle school), "Remember Me," "In Your Eyes," "Along Came Polly"—the list never ends. Forget about going out to rent a movie or seeing a movie in the theater, and think popcorn, pajamas, and blankets.
If you are really feeling adventurous, run the Cupid’s Undie Run!
If you volunteer on the day of the race, you can also run the one-mile fun run for free. You can spread the love beyond yourself and your friends and help benefit the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
