5 Things You Should Know About Black Girls And Their Hair

Sometimes people have questions, but don't know the appropriate time to ask, or what to even ask. So with that being said here are 5 things you should know about Black girls and their hair.

1. DO YOU WASH YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY?

As a black female I have been asked plenty of questions about my hair. No, I do not wash my hair every day. Our hair needs nutrients. If we were to wash our hair every day, it would strip our hair of those needed nutrients. Some wash their hair more frequently than others, but there isn't a problem with going two weeks, or maybe even a month without washing our hair. Our hair doesn't get super oily, we need all that grease and oils in our hair. No it's not cooking oil, or grease you would initially think of. In fact that's one reason why it's harder for us to get Lice.

2. OOOO, CAN I TOUCH YOUR HAIR?

Would you like it if someone came up to you, and just started touching your hair? Probably not. We aren't show horses who enjoy being pet. It's OK to ask if you can touch our hair, but don't just touch it because you want to. We appreciate it if you think our hair looks nice, but it's annoying when you just come and touch our hair. Trust me, I've experienced it enough.

3. IS THAT YOUR REAL HAIR?

More often than not you can tell if a girl is wearing weave. Yes, we have gotten more creative with weaves and sow-ins that look natural, but then there are other times when it's obvious it's not our hair. Or vice versa, it's obvious it's not a weave. If someone has nice hair, as a black person, it doesn't mean it's not our real hair. Which brings me to number.

4. WOW YOU HAVE NICE HAIR.

Thank you, we appreciate the compliments, BUT having nice hair isn't exclusive for black people. Black people have all different kinds of hair textures. We can have fine, to ultra fine, to curly, nappy, course and etc. Some people have nappy hair, but that doesn't mean all black girls do.

5. ARE YOU MIXED WITH SOMETHING?

Most times people associate nice hair with other races and believe if you are black then the only way you can have nice hair is by being mixed. Nope. Not true. We have nice hair, rather we are mixed or not. There will always be someone from the bunch who has bad hair, but overall black girls have good hair.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
