To My BFF Heading To College, From Your BFF In College

My best friend just so happens to be one year younger than me. So, for those of you who have that year or more gap in friendship, this is for you!

1. College doesn’t have to feel like a breakup.

We are BEST friends. Nothing is ever going to change that, even if distance separates us!

2. Your first semester is not going to be perfect.

There are a lot of new, crazy things that you have to adjust to. It’s going to be okay! In fact, it's going to be amazing!

3. Don't be afraid!

I know that you are totally capable of handling everything with grace.

4. Your notes when I first got to college meant the world, so be expecting a lot from me!

Your bulletin board is going to be filled with all of the love that people will send you!

5. Don't let anyone or anything threaten to tear apart your self-worth.

You are BEAUTIFUL. You are smart. You are capable. You are important. If anyone doesn't understand that, you know where to find me.

6. I'm just a phone call or Facetime call away.

If you had a good day, I want to hear about it. If your day was absolutely terrible, I want to hear about it! Call me crying, smiling, or flat out bored. I will just be happy to see your face.

7. If you want space from your friends at home to get settled, then take all the time you need.

I’ll be here whenever you decide to reach out!

8. If you ever have questions, don’t be afraid to ask people.

Put your pride aside, and just ask!

9. If you see a cute boy, talk to him!

He could be a passing stranger, a fantastic friendship, or a forever lover. You never know!

10. Don’t hesitate to invite people (potential friends) to do things.

The way to make friends is to go out of your comfort zone and seek them out. Odds are, they’re looking for friends, too.

11. If you’re planning on rushing, don’t stress yourself out.

You will find your forever home, and if you don’t, then there are other places!

12. Get involved!

There are plenty of organizations that would be honored to have you, but don't overwhelm yourself! Find a good balance.

13. Hug that sweet dog of yours while you still can.

College is a lonely place without him/her.

14. I’m going to miss you more than you will ever realize.

I’ve made it through one year of not essentially living at your house, but I’m still going to miss going home and not finding you in your room.

15. But be expecting me to drive up randomly.

I don’t know how long I can last without seeing you.

I’m so excited for your journey to come, and to go with you from a distance. I LOVE YOU!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
