As if I didn't respect Husker Nation enough, Nebraska came out this first game of the season with the most incredible, chilling tribute paid to Sam Foltz.
Nebraska Huskers, although tenacious and seemingly unshakable, were admittedly unnerved this summer when Sam Foltz, Nebraska's punter, lost his life in an automobile accident, along with Michigan State's punter, Mike Sadler. This was only a couple of weeks before the start of fall camp.
Support for Foltz and his family has been consistently given by both the football team and its ever-devoted fans. Saturday night, at the first football game of the season, Husker Nation stood strong and powerful in the moving tribute the team made for Sam. The number 27 was seen everywhere around the stadium, and Foltz's nephews led the team out of the tunnel.
When the first punting situation of the night occurred, only ten players took the field, leaving room for where Sam Foltz should have been. The team allowed the clock to run to zero. This resulted in a delay of game penalty for the Huskers. Fresno State, the opponent, respectfully declined. The crowd's reaction was unforgettable.
@HuskerFBNation tweeted:
"We had to take a delay of game, weren't able to get all 11 guys out to punt in time.
Missing one of them."
It was a touching moment that any Husker fan will remember for the rest of their life. Memorial Stadium has hosted hundreds of memorable moments: blowouts, losses, huge comebacks, hard losses, but never a moment as strong as this.
Nebraska football has such a rich history of brotherhood, respect, and fans support and devotion. When the team lost Sam, the entire state of Nebraska was hurting, and they still continue to. Moving forward throughout the season, after taking such a hard hit, will be difficult. But if anyone can do it, it is the Husker Nation that I have grown to love and respect endlessly.
So here's to Sam Foltz, as the team dedicates this game to him, this season to him. Nebraska will stay strong. Go Big Red.
