The first week of college can be intimidating for anyone, but perhaps especially for introverts. Many schools have several days following move-in day without classes; they are an opportunity to familiarize yourself with campus and to make friends by attending mixers and other social events. It sounds great, in theory, but for introverts, these events get really old really fast.
1. Watching people wait in hour long lines to get free food.
2. Learning to live with roommates for the very first time.
3. Having to introduce yourself at least ten times on a daily basis.
4. Having strangers come sit at your lunch table because you look "lonely".
It's amazing how often the back-corner-table, headphones in, computer out strategy doesn't work.
5. Being dragged out to parties by your friends.
Always bring your own transportation if the party isn't walking distance from your dorm or apartment.
6. Attending school pep rallies or yell practices...or any school-spirited event.
7. Refusing to go somewhere when people stop at your dorm inviting you out every twenty minutes.
8. Slowly dying inside because classes haven't started yet and the only things available on campus are unnecessary social events.
Your RA will never understand why X-Palooza event does not sound appealing to you.
9. Trying to navigate awkward conversations with people around you.
10. Trying to restrain yourself from violence when drunk students stampede through your hall at 3 A.M.
Bonus points if said drunk students bang on your door.
11. Rejoicing when classes finally start.
Happy first week of classes to everyone, and good luck to my fellow introverts!
