American Voters Suffer From Dori Syndrome

With an overwhelming amount of information thrown at voters daily, it's easy to forget what's important.

You may recall a little controversy that was brought up when the FBI announced they weren’t going to prosecute presumptive Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, over the email-scandal that’s been on the news since she announced her campaign. The very next day though, if you pulled up your news app or looked at your Twitter feed, the FBI’s decision that caused such an uproar with many voters was nowhere near the top. It required you to scroll. Instead, voters were looking at other news, like another police-involved shooting or sports announcements.

Something that was so upsetting to so many people went away so quickly. Why?

Voters suffer from what I’d like to call "Dory Syndrome," a.k.a. short-term memory loss.

It happens all the time. Something occurs that may swing how people vote, but the next day it can all go away with another late-breaking news alert. The media is all too aware of how quickly they can change what people are talking about. With the amount of information we are forced to consume per day, it isn’t a surprise that we lose sight of or forget major announcements like the FBI’s.

“The short memories of the American voters is what keeps our politicians in office.” - Will Rogers

With so many decisions being made everyday, politicians and leaders don’t have to worry if the votes will forgive them for some things they’ve done, because voters have already forgotten what it was they were mad about in the first place.

Now I used to think it was only about little things, but after seeing how quickly people have moved on from the email-scandal, I fear voters are forgetting even more detrimental things. If voters can forget so easily that the director of the FBI acknowledged all the wrongs Ms. Clinton did and then turn around so easily and say she’s off the hook, what else will voters simply forget because there was another shooting or another scandal or another sports star switching teams?I’ve heard more people talk continuously about Kevin Durant switching to the Golden State Warriors than I’ve heard people discussing the FBI’s decision. Granted I live in Oklahoma where we’re all heartbroken, but still!

Voters are getting tired of the massive wave of information they’re meant to digest each day so it’s easier to forget yesterday’s news and move on. But I’m urging people to not forget! Don’t forget the important things that help mold and shape our country. Don’t overlook all the politics because you’re frustrated with the leaders.

You as the American voter have a voice that can make change!

It’s easy for the media or the corrupt political leaders to make you feel like your vote against something won’t change anything but the longer you stay silent, the longer they get their way.

Voters suffer from "Dory Syndrome" but that doesn’t have to be a permanent thing. You can remember, you can speak up and you can make a difference. This is your country, your home, so why not do everything you can to make it a better place? With all the turmoil happening in the States, it is easy to get overwhelmed and not know how to fix it. We can’t fix everything at once and it will take time and a lot of work, but it'll all be worth it in the end.

Just as Dory says, “Just keep swimming.”

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
