As One's Right Hand

Leadership. It’s a fundamental role in society, even more so with regards to the human race. When I was younger I never really had any desire to be a leader beyond the scope of my future kids. As time passed and more responsibilities were placed on me, I soon found myself to be in a position of leadership when I was accepted into my high school debate team. As I gained experience within the organization, I was eventually in charge of new recruits who were new to the playing field and I had to do my best to guide the new recruits towards success. When it came time to choose how I could best serve the organization for everyone’s benefit, I felt that being the vice president would better serve its needs and I could contribute the most that way. Fast forward many years later and I find myself being the vice president once again, only this time for the fraternity I pledged myself towards. It’s been a pattern that I’ve noticed throughout my ventures as I take on these responsibilities. And when I think about it, I find that many people don’t realize how important it is to be one’s right hand. As one’s right hand, he/she is the backbone and pillar of whoever resides at the top. A support that is fundamental for any ambition to be realized, it is the job of the right hand to make sure that the leader carries out his/her agenda with regards to the benefit of whom he/she is leading. When a leader is back against the wall during times of great pressure, it’s the right hand’s responsibility to keep the leader focused and strong. The loss of resolution during times off great pressure only invites failure for an organization. It often stems from a leader taking on too much and eventually break down due to the overwhelming stress that such responsibility instills. The right hand must be prepared to tackle what the leader is unable to and, in certain instances, take over the leadership position should the leader lack the strength or means to do it for whatever reason. As one’s right hand, it’s also a responsibility to act as a personal advisor towards your leader. Sometimes, a leader’s judgement isn’t always the best and refusal to keep an open perspective and flexibility with regards to major decisions will eventually lead to one’s downfall. The right hand provides guidance and a different perspective should the judgement of a leader lack structure and reason. This also requires the conviction of the right hand to be firm as well for misguidance often results in disaster. As the president’s right hand in my fraternity, I do what I feel is necessary to ensure that his tenure isn’t as straining as it often can be. Seeing his vision and goals coming to fruition is something I take great pride in as a man in my position. And although I may not be directly leading the organization I serve, indirectly providing a great impact towards the organization is enough to provide contention and satisfaction to say the least.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
