One question I am all too familiar with being asked is “Why is your face so red?” And I don’t mean cute blushing: I mean red, like a stop sign or a tomato. I never have an adequate answer for this question other than “it just does, and I can’t help it.” Some common struggles of turning red all the time include:
1. Looking like you're going to die during and after physical activity.
And you might actually be exhausted. But your face would be beet red even if you weren't, so there's really no way for the average onlooker to tell.
2. Being caught off guard by someone you didn't expect to see and inexplicably turning red.
3. Turning red where you’re unexpectedly put on the spot.
These situations include (but are not limited to) classrooms, lectures, interviews, auditions, and pretty much any kind of confrontation.
4. Not being able to hide it when you're embarrassed.
Your red face is a dead giveaway.
5. Not being able to hide most emotions, actually.
Your red face is still a giveaway to what you're really feeling. It just as well could have subtitles.
6. At some point in your life you've had a nickname like ‘tomato-face’ or ‘pinkie' and have gotten seriously fed up with it (which probably made your face turn red).
7. Turning red when someone compliments you.
8. Your friends have played the game "Let's see how red we can make ____'s face turn."
The truth of our lives as often red-faced people is that we can't change our complexion. But, there are a lot worse ways to be in life than red-faced. Accept that you can't change it and embrace that beautiful face instead.
