8 Things To Defeat The Midterm Blues

It's that awkward, anxiety-inducing time of the year again.

It's that point in the semester. You know the one. Midterms are petering out to a close and fall break is becoming a distant memory. You're not exactly sure where you stand in any of your classes, and the anxiety is becoming overwhelming, the weather's getting colder, and the sky is darkening quicker than you'd like. Luckily a national holiday falls right on this awful in-between point in the semester. Here are 6 Halloween traditions to keep you going.

1. Making a leaf pile

What better way to curb mid-semester stress than making a huge leaf pile and jumping in it? If you choose a spot by campus uninhabited enough, the untouched leaves actually smell quite nice as a bonus (not even joking).

2. Watching a Movie

Hocus Pocus, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Halloweentown, need I say more? Halloween season is the perfect time to be ~spooky~ and ~nostalgic~ at the same time. Funny movies, creepy movies, and nostalgic movies are all valid choices when in charge of movie night equivalent if the AUX cord.

3. Carving a pumpkin

Be funny, be topical, be creepy. Impress your friends with your knife skills by carving an amazing pumpkin to illuminate.

4. Cooking and baking

Cooking and baking not only smell and taste good, but it can serve as a good stress reliever. This time of year can cut into socialization and eating time. Kill two birds with one stone and cook with friends, with no harm done to your scheduled nap time.

5. Not procrastinating

Email that professor, start that essay, read that chapter. Write to-do lists full of simple, doable tasks. Trust me when I say, checking those things off and going to bed with as little anxiety as possible is a rare but great feeling.

6. Indulging in warm drinks

Try something new (I recommend matcha lattes, but that's just me). Get rid of those chilly nights before the dorm heating kicks in for the season with a nice warm sugary drink or tea.

7. Listen to new music

Is there a new album everyone has been talking about? See what all the hype is for and get on it! Now that the weather is colder, you're probably not missing out on anything staying inside and playing it in the background while you study.

8. Party

It's Halloween season. Take advantage of the parties happening on and around campus by going ahead and letting yourself go out with friends. Don't feel guilty about letting yourself have a good time on a Friday night if, realistically, you'd be in your dorm procrastinating anyway.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
