Looking back on my freshman year of college, I realize how dependent I was on others for my own happiness. Even though it was only three years ago, I feel like I've grown so much more than I thought I would. I wouldn't be here today without support, no doubt, but I credit much of my accomplishments now to learning about myself and what I can handle. Here are some things I think you'll learn if you take the time to shut out the world for a bit.
1. Enjoying going places by myself
Do you know how much fun I had going to a concert by myself? I talked to so many more people because I wasn't tethered to another person.
2. Turning off my phone
I have to get back in the habit of it, but turning my phone off an hour before bed is so relaxing. Invest in a cheap alarm clock, or just charge your phone on the other side of the room.
3. Finding new things that you like
Sure, experiencing new things with people can be really fun, but putting yourself out of your comfort zone feels like an amazing feat. Plus, you might try something that you'd be too embarrassed to do around people you know. Take a belly dancing class or audition for a local play.
4. Learning to cope with problems by myself
Don't get me wrong, I still talk my problems out with my friends, but I've been able to talk myself down from panic attacks and have been able to take a step back when I've put too much on my own plate.
5. Letting go of toxic people
I know what I deserve, and I'm not afraid to be alone. Toxic people have no room in my life, and I have a much easier time knowing when someone is toxic.
6. Not relying on others
My freshman year of college I couldn't drive back home by myself, because I'd never driven over an hour before that. I also was easily persuaded to skip class if I knew my friends wouldn't be there. I need to accomplish my goals, and no one can do that except me.
7. Putting myself first
I know who number one is and I can walk around much more confidently today than years previous.
Now go forth feeling yourself.
