6 Ways To Deal With Feeling Like a Failure

As a college student failure is something we are all together too familiar with, so here are some tips on how to deal with it.

Here I am, a college student still in the transition phase between childhood to adulthood. Some of us can feel stuck because we haven't done anything with our lives yet and failing our Bio final can make us feel like we never will. But, fear not, whether or not everyone around you shows it, we have all been there. So, here are my 6 tips for keeping your head on straight when nothing goes right.

1. Take a deep breath

Take a moment to do the classic stress breathing: in for seven, hold for seven, out for seven. This will start to calm you down and if this method doesn't work, you can always resort to the paper bag. If scientific genius Sheldon Cooper has to resort to bag breathing sometimes you can too.

2. Text it out

Friends and roommates can be a great resource here, just shoot a message to the group chat about how Professor Doe made you feel like a moron when he called on you in class this morning. Odds are they have a funny story or similar experience that will have you laughing about the situation in no time.

3. EAT!

Snickers made a commercial about this. People, we are not ourselves when we're hungry! Sometimes I will notice my mood is a lot more negative when I haven't had a good meal, so go grab a bite with some friends so you can knock this funk out.

4. Make a List

Whenever you feel like you haven't done anything right, take a few minutes and just jot down achievements you're proud of, even if its just winning the third grade spelling bee. Then write a list of the things you have achieved this week even simple things like getting your homework done or showing up to work early. Little achievements and little successes lead to the bigger ones. It's like a gymnast, you don't make it to the Olympics without doing all the little things first.

5. Youtube Fail Videos

Whenever I think I have messed up big time I always find myself gravitating towards Youtube. Youtube skateboarding fails or a fail compilation and soon you will be laughing and being so thankful your life failures aren't a viral video for everyone to see.

6. Call someone with more experience

If you have tried everything you can think of and nothing has perked up your mood yet its time to call someone older than you. Whenever I am feeling down, I always end up calling my grandparents. They have been where I am right now and made it out just fine. Usually, someone older than you, like parents and grandparents, will have a fresh perspective. While you have never been 70, they have been in their 20's, they made it, and so can you. My grandparents always say, "Keep in mind what is a mountain now will look like a bump in the road later."

Overall, we college students are no strangers to failure and thats not going to change anytime soon. Just keep in mind where you are now isn't where you will always be and that the best way to get over something is to just laugh it off. So for now take a deep breath, eat a snack, and laugh about it. You can do this.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
