The 6 Best Things About Christmas Break

With the Christmas season comes the end of finals, and a few weeks at your parents' house away from school and all of the pressures that come with it. Coming home from college can be a strange experience, with your family having changed since you’ve been gone and your role in the house becoming different than before. But Christmas brings with it a special warmth to coming home, with some added perks.

6. Christmas Food

There’s nothing better than coming home exhausted from finals and drowning yourself in cookies, cakes, peppermint everything, hot chocolate, ice cream, bread pudding, pie, and all of the other food lying around the house.

5. Christmas Decorations

Home usually feels like home because of the way it’s decorated, but Christmas season brings that to a whole new level. From decorations you bought recently in a special place, to a stocking that was knitted by your Dad’s great Aunt’s sister-in-law, nostalgia greets you at every corner.

4. Pets

You get to see your pets when you’re home, and cuddle them as much as you want for the entire break. And sometimes they are even dressed as Christmas characters. You can’t really ask for anything better than that.

3. Free Food

You can eat as much as you want and it's free!!! You can take a break from the dining hall and Top Ramen, and still save money.

2. Free Laundry

Paying for laundry is such a pain. It’s never in a convenient place, you never have enough quarters, and usually the washer and dryer ruin your clothes in the process. When you come home, you can wash each item of your clothing individually and you won’t have to share with that many people, or pay a cent!

1. Having a free schedule

Christmas break is the ultimate vacation from school. You usually get almost a month off. That’s enough time to catch up on all of the sleep that you missed last quarter, do a detox, start learning a language, and binge-watch every show you want. It’s truly the most wonderful time of year.

So, enjoy your Christmas break, eat lots of food, relax as much as possible, and prepare for the next quarter in real Christmas fashion!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
