5 Reasons Why Tutwiler is the Best Dorm at Alabama

I can truly say that living in Tutwiler was one of best experiences of my freshman year at Alabama, and it will be one of the best experiences during my four years attending Alabama.

I am a rising sophomore and, honestly, I am quite jealous of all the incoming freshmen who have decided to live in Tutwiler. Yes, it is true that Tutwiler is disgusting with its community-style bathrooms, and that the rooms are the size of a box. Sometimes, the couches from the common areas will end up in the elevators, and they will get shut off for the day. Rumor also has it that there is black mold in the vents -- um, gross!

So, I have put together a list of reasons why good ol' Tut is the best dorm on the University of Alabama’s campus.

1. You meet some of your best friends while living in Tut.

While living in Tutwiler, I got the opportunity to make some lifelong friendships with different girls from different places across the country. I still talk to most of these friends all the time, even though they are no longer down the hall from me. The majority of the girls living in Tut are in a sorority, so you easily make friends with girls in many different sororities, which means you have a bigger and better friend group.

2. You have a big closet with lots of options.

Just kidding, you really don’t have a big closet at all. However, you do live in a 14-story building with over 900 girls who all have cute clothes and are more than willing to share clothes with you! Whether it’s an outfit to wear out, or a game day outfit, you are in good hands.

3. Some of the best sunsets can be seen from Tut’s windows.

I lived on the 12th floor in good ol' Tut, and I strongly believe that my room had one of the best views of the sunset over Bryant-Denny Stadium. During the fall semester, my roommate and I always made sure we were back in our room just in time for the sunset because they were that beautiful.

4. You are less than a minute away from your friends.

“I’ll be there in less than a minute!” That’s a very common text you get from your friends while living in Tut, and that’s the best part of living in a dorm because everyone is so close to each other. Unfortunately, it won’t ever be like that again when you move out of Tut. Instead, you will be saying, “I’ll be there in less than 10 minutes!”

5. The location of Tut is prime.

There were several times when I would hit the snooze button multiple times and I was almost late to class. However, Tut’s location on campus can’t be more perfect. Bryant-Denny and sorority row are right next to the dorm building. It’s also less than a 10-minute walk to the quad and where your classes are.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
