5 Hacks to Touristing in Charleston

Growing up in Charleston, I was under the false impression that I had done everything that there is to do in my city! I have seen it everythign from the U.S.S. Yorktown in Mount Pleasant, to the iconic pineapple fountain in Waterfront Park, to every beach in the Charleston area. Once I made the decision to stay in Charleston for college, I realized that there are endless sites to see in the holy city. Here are a few hacks to touristing Charleston that never seem to get old:

1. Botany Bay

Located off of Edisto Island, South Carolina, Botany Bay is relatively unknown to many. The bay used to be the home of a plantatation, but it is presently known to be a safe place for a wide aray of wildlife. With over 4,000 acres of land this beautiful property gives people a chance to stroll along the beach and to enjoy the large oak trees and the ruins of the old plantation. So grab your eno and your camera to capture the beauty of this serene location!

2. Destination Movie Nights

Movie nights are sponsored by various holy city businesses, and they are offered in a different locations all over the city. Folly Beach and Patriot's Point in Mount Pleasant are only a couple of the frequent movie destinations. So grab your date, a blanket, and get excited about the big screen!

3. Coffee, Coffee, Everywhere!

Honestly, this one shouldn't surprise anyone. Charleston is filled with tons of quaint coffee shops. I have to say that Cuppa Manna is probably my favorite (located in Downtown, Summerville). While not only having a pretty good cup of coffee, the atmosphere gives you a chance to just sit down and relax without having to worry about being too close to someone or awkwardly sitting beside someone. It honestly makes for a nice place to do homework, meet with friends, or just in joy life with a cup of coffee by your side.

4. The Gardens

Charleston has a number of gardens and plantations. Each garden houses a unique story filled with endless adventures. My personal favorite Magnolia Gardens. This plantation is great for all ages because the breath taking views but also the fun train rides and boat tours. I mean hey, if a bunch of my nineteen year old friends love it, then surely there's hope for everyone else.

5. Pitt Street Bridge

Pitt Street Bridge is located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Whether you are looking for an escape, or for an afternoon picinic location, beautiful views are guarunteed.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
