31 Signs You Know You Grew Up In Winston-Salem

*Sighs* Oh, the 336. A monotonous town thats a "big city" but low-key, our downtown has about 5 streets, and 4th street is pretty much the only street you can walk down without fear of being mugged. Whether you were a Reynolds, West, Tabor, or Reagan kid, here are 31 signs you know you've grown up in Winston.

1. You have never met anyone who is actually a Dash fan.

2. If you're from Lewisville, Clemmons or Kernersville, you just say you're from Winston because it's so much less complicated (love you forever Clemraq).

3. As a kid, you played optimist soccer, and then eventually played for Twin City. If you were pretentious, you played for Fusion (not just saying this because I wasn't good enough for the league, it's fine.)

4. If you went to Reagan, I'm truly sorry.

5. If you're a native of "Tabor City" you spent your evenings and weekends loitering at "La Ca."

6. Living in Buena Vista is a #lifegoal.

7. You took your prom pictures at either Reynolda or Tanglewood.

8. Fun fact: We've used the hyphen for over 100 years in our name.

9. When Forever 21 opened up at the mall in middle school, it was a time to be alive.

10. The fact that the old Wachovia building is known as the "penis shaped building."

11. You have gone to the "legendary" Festival of Lights more times than you could count. YES WE KNOW, the mermaid one has been there since like '95.

12. Free cake square Mondays at Dewys, we love you.

13. Finally getting to go to the Career Center junior and senior year, and not having to socialize with anyone from your homeschool anymore. #Blessed

14. Never understanding when people from Charlotte are from either from North Charlotte or South Charlotte. Like, isn't is all the same? Also why is your downtown called "uptown"?

15. Davie will forever remain a wannabe Forsyth County School.

16. Highway 52 is the scariest thing known to man.

17. Being a Wake bandwagon fan.

18. Going to the Dixie Classic Fair every single year since you can remember.

19. You went on a class field trip to SciWorks every year in Elementary School.

20. The West vs. East soccer rivalry.

21. Sneaking Cook Out milkshakes into the movie theatre on Hanes Mall Blvd.

22. Juice Shop, that is all.

23. Every time you had visitors or family in town, it called for a mandatory trip to Old Salem, because what else was there to do?

24. Having your High School graduation at the coliseum.

25. You went to Ziggys downtown to see bands perform.

26. When the mall made the new rule that you had to be at least 18 to stay after 5pm on weekends because of our "growing gang problems." *Soft smiles*

27. Tobacco.

28. The only good thing that came from West Forsyth was Chris Paul. And Telford, of course.

29. When we finally got a Trader Joes, all the hipsters and rich kids from Reynolds came alive.

30. Friday nights after football games, Sonic or McDonalds would be the move to figure out plans for the night.

31. And finally, home of the one and only, Krispy Kreme.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
