24 Things My Dad Has Taught Me
Mary Thomas

Father's Day this year was spent the same way it has been for the last 10 yeas: at the ballpark. Considering my father grew up with all brothers and spent his youth on a field or court, I think it is safe to say he doesn't mind all that much! I have learned over the course of my life that there are things my father has taught me, whether he knew it or not, that are invaluable. So, Dad, here's to you and the things you taught me that get me through this crazy thing I call life.

1. A hug from your dad really is the cure to anything.

2. There are times where all you want to hear is your father's voice and it instantly calms you down.

3. As you grow up, it is of the utmost importance to be yourself.

4. Friends become your family.

5. You should be kind to everyone you meet and eventually everyone will know you in this little old town.

6. There is no dream too big that hard work can't achieve.

7. It is okay to cry (mostly when watching the stories on the ESPYS)

8. Growing up at the ballpark is the best childhood a girl could dream of.

9. Never under any circumstances, cheer for the Yankees.

10. Sacrifice things for the ones you love to be happy.

11. No one can accomplish your dreams for you.

12. You can get through anything in life with the love of your family.

13. No matter what I embark on in life, I have my father supporting me every step of the way.

14. Dads are very observant and know more than you think.

15. Saying goodbye to your father when you move away is the hardest goodbye.

16. Life is an adventure: you should spend it making memories and trying new things.

17. One day a man has to love me like my father and that is a pretty high standard.

18. If you ask for money, he may roll his eyes but will ultimately give in and help you out.

19. The "I Love Yous" aren't just said, but rather shown through the little things.

20. The mistakes you make will disappoint him, but never make him stop loving you.

21. I would not be who I am today without him.

22. God outdid himself when he gave me the amazing man I get to call Dad.

23. He is your number one fan, your first love, and your first role model.

24. A father's love is unconditional.

So Dad, I could have gone on forever but these are a few I have been feeling extra thankful for lately. I know this time of year can't be easy for you, considering you don't get to spend it with your father. I hope you know that he is looking down on you, so proud of the man and father you have become. I know I couldn't get through life without you! I love you, Dad!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
