20 Things Only A Lifeguard Will Understand

"NO RUNNING ON THE POOL DECK!"

20 Things Only A Lifeguard Will Understand

I have been a lifeguard at my city's public pool every summer since I was 15. At the end of every summer, I tell myself that next summer I won't work there and I will get a job somewhere else. But I always end up coming back. Why? Because lifeguarding is the best summer job a college student could ask for. Sitting in the sun, yelling at little kids, checking out cute guys behind the safety of your dark sunglasses – what could be better than that?

These are some things that only someone who has been a lifeguard can understand.

1. You're a rule follower. And you have no problem getting onto patrons who break them.

2. You must have a great tan.

3. You always smell like a mixture of chlorine, sweat, and sunscreen.

4. You never want to go to the pool with your friends when they invite you.

5. Thunder sounds like music to your ears.

6. Lightning is your number one best friend.

7. You make friends with the families and kids who come to the pool regularly.

8. You always have your water bottle with you.

9. Day camps are your worst nightmare.

10. You get upset when you see kids and adults who don't know how to swim.

11. You're always hungry, tired, and sunburnt.

12. You've considered paying a kid to throw up in the pool so you have to close early.

13. Putting lane ropes in the pool is the only workout you need for a day.

14. You have a LifeProof iPhone case.

15. Your skin is always wrinkled, peeling, leathery, and callused.

16. Your fellow guards are some of your best friends.

17. You know what it's like to save someone's life.

18. You have little ways to entertain yourself whilst watching the pool from the stand.

19. You were personally offended when you realized that neighborhood kids were sneaking into the pool after hours.

20. No matter how much you complain about it, you know you have the best summer job ever.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
