17 Totally Valid Excuses to Get Out of Helping Your Friend Move

It’s a fact of life: your friends move. Moving is a stressful time for everyone involved even if you are not the one physically picking up your life and integrating yourself into a new place. Packing takes days and many times people ask friends for a hand to make their move easier. However, as much as we would like to help, the stress, anxiety, and tension that comes along with moving makes us want to think of excuses to get out of helping.

1. It was arm day at the gym yesterday and my arms are too sore to lift any big boxes

2. I chipped my nail and the doctor said to take it easy today.

3. I need to wait at home for the repairman to fix the TV in our guest room.

4. I threw my back out last night dancing at the bar.

5. I have a terrible sunburn and my eyes are almost swollen shut. I can barely see, so I don't think I will be much help.

6. Thinking about moving reminds me of my traumatic moving experience as a kid so my therapist doesn't think it's a good idea for me to help.

7. My dog ate chocolate last night so I have to take him to the vet.

8. My horoscope says not to leave the house today and stay away from cars.

9. I have this really contagious eye infection and the doctor advised me not to be around anyone for 48 hours.

10. I completely forgot I have to go to my parents for a BBQ because my uncle who lives abroad is visiting for the week.

11. My dog and I got sprayed by a skunk.

12. My house is infested with spiders, so I need to wait for the exterminator to come.

13. I need to watch my cousins because my aunt and uncle are finalizing their divorce.

14. My OCD is so bad when it comes to organizing things that I will honestly just be a distraction and will not be much help.

15. Remember how I saw that hit and run the other day?…Well, I have to go down to the police station to give my statement.

16. I am too clumsy…the last time I helped my parents moved I dropped the box of my mom’s favorite childhood ornaments.

17. I always loved all your furniture and stuff, so I know if I am helping you move all of it, it will make me resent you even more.

All excuses aside, you can avoid this whole situation by using CORT Furniture Rental. They can not only do the moving for you, but also they’ll help you avoid those gross couches from Grandma’s basement by setting you up with an apartment full of cool furniture. Don’t say I never did anything for you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
