Moving to the Big Apple from Syracuse has been no easy transition (we all know the Orange are known for their excessive hometown pride.) The hardest part about transitioning downstate was adjusting to the lack of Upstate food (especially the scarcity of fresh apples), and let's not forget about the Long Island accents. New York City and Upstate New York may be in the same state, however, that's about all they have in common. Here, I've compiled a list of everything you should feast on before you leave Syracuse for any period longer than a couple of weeks.
1. Half Moon Cookies
Because nothing beats a good ol' Harrison Bakery half moon cookie.
2. Bomb Buffalo Wings
People who aren't from upstate New York think that Buffalo Wild Wings is good. Sigh.
3. Bruegger's
I would kill for a bagel right about now.
4. Insomnia Cookies
Because what could be better than warm, delicious cookies delivered to your doorstep in the middle of the night?
5. Apples
I actually went home for a weekend just for the Apple Fest. No one does apples like upstate NY does apples.
6. Salt Potatoes
Who wouldn't love a baby potato full of deliciousness?!
7. Dinosaur BBQ
We were on Food Network. I think this says it all.
8. Tully'sI can't even go near the chicken tenders they serve anywhere else. You could say I'm a little spoiled.
9. Byrne Dairy
No one does green milk like Byrne Dairy... or does green milk, period.
10. Utica Greens
Just look at that masterpiece.
11. Pastablities Stretch Bread and Hot Tomato Oil
Again, it was on the Food Network.
12. Chicken Riggies
Who would have known we only have this amazing creation in Upstate New York?
13. Varsity Pizza
A classic after a game at the Dome snack.
14. Gianelli Sausage
Don't forget the peppers and onions.
15. Gannons Isle
As summer approaches, fresh homemade hard ice cream sounds better and better.
Last, but not least...
16. Wegmans
THE HOLY GRAIL OF DELICIOUS FOOD. I WORSHIP YOU.
