Summer break means many things. It means summer jobs, reconnecting with friends, and most importantly summer vacation. Rather than vacationing at the same place this summer, change it up and give Hayward Wisconsin a try. Here are 16 reasons why Hayward is a remarkable place to visit.
1. Great weather
The 80 degree temperatures during the day are perfect for all of the outdoor activities that Hayward has to offer, while the 60 degree temperatures at night are great for roasting marshmallows on the patio and makes even better sleeping weather.
2. Great food
My favorite ‘F’ word is food which means that vacationing somewhere with subpar food is not acceptable. The wide range of restaurants on the lake allows you to experience the beauty of Hayward while enjoying some great food. Make sure to try the mushroom swiss burger at Pat’s Landing. Oh, and don’t forget about $1 burger night at R&R Bayview or Norske Nook’s award winning pies.
3. Great fishing
From bluegill to muskie, you’ll never run out of fish to catch. As you visit Hayward more frequently, you’ll be able to find secret fishing holes where you can catch a keeper every time you stick your pole in the water.
4. Peaceful
Step away from the hustle & bustle of popular tourist attractions and take in everything Hayward has to offer. Falling asleep to the sounds of boats on the water and waking up to a loon call and the smell of bacon is a wonderful thing.
5. Amazing sunrises and sunsets
Although I’ve never actually seen the sunrise in Hayward, I’m sure each one is just as beautiful as the sunsets. Each sunset never fails to surprise me by being more beautiful than the previous nights sunset. Hopefully I’ll be able to experience a sunrise soon.
6. Too many water sports to count
Water skiing, jet skiing, and tubing - oh my! If you want to spend hours out on the water but aren’t sure if you’ll have enough to keep you occupied, do not worry. It’s easy to spend hours on the water but have it feel like 20 minutes. It’s true what they say: time flies when you’re having fun.
7. Fireworks display on the Fourth of July
Imagine your town's fireworks display and multiply it by 20. Hop in a boat and travel down to Chief Lake Lodge and watch the fireworks over the lake. If you don’t have a boat that’s OK too, since there’s plenty of space to lounge in a chair on the lawn. And the fireworks are just as great.
8. A plethora of wildlife
It’s common to see deer hanging out in the forest, but it’s even more common to see bald eagles while you’re out fishing on the lake. There’s also an occasional black bear spotted rooting through garbage cans.
9. Primitive camping locations
With hundreds of islands throughout the lake to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find a secluded camping area. Just make sure you bring a tent and a boat to bring you back to civilization. If you prefer camping in an RV, there are also multiple areas for that.
10. Luxury cabins
So you don’t like camping in tents or RV’s? Good thing you can find other types of places to stay! Luxury cabins are a sight to see when traveling along the water, and one day I hope to live in one.
PS: This one is for sale if anyone is interested! (hint hint mom and dad)
11. The best fudge shop in Wisconsin (An opinion, but a great one at that)
Tremblay’s Sweet Shop in downtown Hayward has something to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. There’s gummy candy, salt-water taffy, peanut brittle, and my personal favorite, homemade fudge, not to mention a whole lot more. There’s even a viewing area where you can watch people making the fudge from scratch.
12. Home to the Freshwater fishing hall of fame
Have you ever wondered what a realistic, four-story tall muskie fish looks like? Neither have I, if I’m being honest. But if you ever want to find out, make sure to check out the fishing hall of fame. Part of the museum is a fiberglass muskie, allowing guests to walk inside, and see pictures of world record holders. When you make it to the top of the muskie you can walk out onto the observation deck located in the mouth of the fish.
13. Lumberjack World Championship
The Lumberjack World Championship is a huge event in Hayward where people come from all over the world to compete (hence world championship). They have competitions ranging from logrolling to the pole climb. I’ve never actually been able to go to one, but hearing the hype about it when I visit every summer builds the excitement for when I finally get the chance to go. This years competition is July 28-30, so make sure to get your tickets while you can!
14. Bonding with family and friends
Hayward is a great place to go to grow closer to family and friends. Each year you leave with new memories and unforgettable experiences that seem to outdo those from the previous year. You can even make T-shirts to commemorate special moments.

15. My home away from home
Ever since my first trip to Hayward in 2000, I’ve been obsessed. Counting down the days until I go back has become a part of my routine. I’ve found a love for the outdoors and a greater love for traditions.
Until next time Hayward.
