Fitness / activity trackers have become extremely popular in the past year. There are many different brands, but FitBit is one of the most popular. I personally have a FitBit but I've found these traits to be true among all fitness tracker users. Some people think activity trackers are just a fad but with growing obesity levels and concern for personal health I think they are here to stay. Anyone with one knows how quickly you become a slave to that little black piece of plastic. These are 15 things I know to be true of my fellow FitBit fanatics.
1. You're extremely competitive with your friends on FitBit. Oh, Taylor is winning the weekend warrior competition? Guess I'm going for another afternoon walk, then another and another.
2. You get furious with yourself if you forget to put on. Any steps I take without on basically aren't real. Did I even go to class if I don't get the credit for walking there?
3. You check it more frequently than you check Twitter/Instagram and hate waiting for it to sync. A red or yellow smiley is more motivational than any "Fitspiration" Instagram account.
4. Your friends who don't have/use FitBits think you're crazy. If they're not tuning you out completely when you take about your FitBit, they are judging your habits. It's totally, completely normal to pace around your house at night to hit your goal.
5. You've tried to lure them into the crazy, and succeeded with a few. Nothing is better than converting a non-believer. Welcome to the dark side: we have tennis shoes and an obsession with green smileys.
6. Speaking of the smileys, nothing is worse than finishing the day without a green one. It's embarrassing how much pride you get from a semi-creepy looking emoticon.
7. If you worked outside this summer, you probably have a tan line. And to you is absolutely worth it.
8. If you have to dress professionally on a regular basis, you sprung for the Tory Burch cover. It costs more than double the actual tracker but you can't put a price on style, or the joy from not losing a single step you took that day just because you need to look polished. Overpriced activity tracking jewelry? Treat yo'self.
9. You've probably forgotten to wear it for a few days, but like a bad ex-boyfriend you always go back to it remembering how happy it made you. This time will be different.
10. Days when you're stuck sitting down studying are more torturous than ever before. I'd be lying if I didn't look up how much a treadmill with a desk costs. Far out of my price range, but I have definitely taken my textbooks to the gym and gotten very little studying down; but lots of steps, and we all know which is more important.
11. Getting a new badge warrants a screenshot sent to your fellow FitBit crazed friends. "I finally got the hiking boot (35,000 steps)!! My legs are jello and I probably will fall when I try to stand up tomorrow, but it was so worth it."
12. Going to the mall is even more fun because shopping actually requires a lot of walking. Online shopping is fun and all, but there's nothing like a trip to the mall. You know immediately if you can pull off that new trend while simultaneously racking up your steps. Bonus points for floors if you have a FitBit Charge and the mall is more than one story.
13. The decision between a Flex and a Charge was like choosing between ice cream and cake. You probably spent more time weighing the pros and cons of each than you did making your class schedule.
14. Getting it to charge makes you feel like you could be a brain surgeon for the precision required. Every millimeter counts. It only takes 4 hours and selling your soul to the devil for it to properly charge.
15. You love the company because they've made you healthier and now are donating a million dollars to three charities that tackle some of our nation's biggest health problems.
From November 9th to November 20th, Fitbit is offering the FitForGood contest. FitBit will be donating $1,000,000 to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. All you have to do to participate is register your FitBit on their website with the competition and choose the charity you would like your steps to go towards. The charity with the most steps at the end of the challenge will receive $500,000, the second and third $350,000 and $150,000, respectively.
