On September 8, 2016, a Texas high school student killed herself after shooting her female classmate. The 14-year-old girl attending Alpine High School in Alpine, Texas, instantly died after shooting herself.
Sheriff Ronny Dodson claimed that the victim was injured, but seemed to have no life-threatening injuries. Dodson found the dead girl in a bathroom, along with the gun near her body.
Video shows the Alpine High School students evacuating from the school building hugging and supporting each other. CNN confirmed that "The Brewster County Sheriff's Office initially said two shooters were believed to be on the loose, but Dodson said later that with the initial shooter dead, no others were being sought."
The Alpine community consists of approximately 6,500 residents.Sheriff Dodson said that the shooter was a recent Alpine community member and had only moved to the area only six months prior. According to police, even though they could not find any reason behind the shooter's actions, her family has said her to be a very good student.
Police officials were also notified of potential bomb threats and were searching for bomb threats directed at a nearby Alpine hospital and Sul Ross State University. A note was found on a nearby motel door with the indication of a bomb threat. However, police officers and Chief Russell Scown claimed that the bomb threat had nothing to do with the Alpine High School shooting. Officers used bomb-sniffing dogs that sufficiently searched the school grounds for possible explosives. Nothing was found.
A junior attending Alpine High said that she was in second period when her teacher suddenly screamed, "Get in the classroom!"
She said, "My teacher...yelled to everyone to get into the closet. We heard someone yelling and running down the hall. We all started crying."
After some time, a police officer evacuated the students out of the classroom. The junior stated, "There was blood on the floor in the cafeteria that I saw when we went past it on our way out of the school. One of the officers told us to keep our hands up and run out of the building, so I only saw the blood quickly," she said. "It was so scary and intense. I've never been so scared in my life."
Alpine School District and its 280 students were on lockdown Thursday morning. After approximately 40 minutes, all students and teachers were evacuated. Residents seemed to be in total shock, with this shooting occurring just two weeks after the school year officially began.
"You can believe we are upset," Sherriff Dodson said. "We are still in shock for the most part."
The Alpine shooting goes to show that there needs to be more gun control. Giving an individual the right to possess arms is extremely dangerous, especially when on a 14-year-old girl. Pre-teens, let alone teenagers, most likely do not know how to correctly operate a gun. There needs to be stricter law enforcement on gun control. School shootings have become so common that they are becoming a normal part of society. Hearing about a high school shooting is expected in 2016. What will happen in 2017?
