13 Ways To Take Care of Yourself

To those who battle with mental illness: Take a deep breath.

Now, ask yourself these questions:

When was the last time I showered?

When was the last time I ate something?

When was the last time I slept a full eight hours?

When was the last time I worked out?

When was the last time I asked for help?

When did I stop taking care of myself?

18.5% of the U.S. Population suffers from mental illness per year. Believe me when I say this: You are not alone. In between already stressful life commitments, there are moments when you take care of others before yourself. Whether it's holding the door for a stranger with their hands full or helping a friend get through a breakup, being selfless consumes time, energy, and motivation. This is for those who struggle with mental illness and self-care. Self-care can be a lot of work and it is completely understandable that you just haven't been caring for yourself lately. Here are some ways to take care of yourself (Each individual has unique needs and interests, this list is just a few ideas, not a guideline).

1. Shower/Take a Bath

Firstly, if you haven't showered in a while this is a good way to boost your personal hygiene. But bathing can also be a stress reliever too! Indulge in a bubble bath or add some essential oils to your bath water. If you don't have a bath tub try a salt scrub in the shower to exfoliate!

2. Write Something

Write a poem. Write a list. Write a short story. Write your weekly schedule. Write in a journal. There is just something therapeutic about taking your thoughts and putting them on paper; to watch the ink flow from your pen.

3. Workout

Work out for the health benefits, but also for a sense of accomplishment! Do some yoga, go for a jog, or maybe lift some weights. Working out relieves stress and it can even be your alibi according to Elle Woods!

4. Take a nap

Yes, take a nap. If you don't regularly get enough sleep you may feel tired all the time. Letting your mind rest is just as important as taking physical rest after a workout. This is a temporary solution, but it will make you feel revived for at least a little while.

5. Eat something healthy

If you're frequently busy it may be hard to eat balanced meals. Make time to eat a healthy, complete meal. Trust me, your body will thank you later.

6. Or indulge in something not so healthy...

Go for it. Once in a while it's nice to get that greasy cheeseburger or super sugary milkshake. Treat yourself with a delightfully unhealthy tidbit.

7. Dance

Let loose! Crank up the music and show off your best moves at the club or in the privacy of your own room. Don't worry about being perfect just move your body and have fun!

8. Have a good laugh

Laughter is said to be the best medicine. Go to a comedy show if you'd like, but I find that having a conversation over dinner can be one of the most laughter-inducing situations. If these things are not in your wheelhouse, fake it. Force yourself to laugh, try laughing without smiling, do your most evil laugh, etc.

9. Pet something fluffy and cute (unless it's a service animal*)

*Please respect that on-duty service animals are doing an extremely important job and should not be pet (without prior permission) since it could distract them from their duties at hand.

That being said, if you're in dire need of some cuddling you should find a cuddly animal, like above, to pet. Studies have shown that playing or petting a dog can boost Oxycontin levels! Domesticated animals like cats, dogs, hamsters, etc. are some of the best cuddle buddies. Granted some animals may not want to be smothered with love and that's OK. Just let them lay near you and admire them from afar.

10. Cry

Go ahead. Let it all out. It's OK to cry and let yourself be a little vulnerable. Crying can actually make you feel a sense of comfort and relief.

11. Wash your sheets

That's right, clean your sheets. They might not be so dirty at first glance, but you won't regret feeling productive and having a sense of order in your life. Also having a fresh smelling sheets and warm blankets when you lay down for bed will help you sleep!

12. Pamper yourself

Go out and get a massage or do some retail therapy! Not one for spending too much? Save some money and do an at home spa night with face masks and a d.i.y. mani/pedi.

13. Absolutely Nothing

That's right! Take some time to do absolutely nothing with no regrets.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
