13 Lesser Known Holidays

Did you know that there's a National Fried Chicken Day?

What’s the first image that comes to your mind when you see/hear the word holiday? For me, I think of Valentine’s Day: couples declaring their love for each other, people dressing up in red or pink, and those little message heart candies that no one really eats. I think of New Year’s Day when people gather around a television to watch the ball drop in Times Square at midnight. I think of Independence Day where there are backyards full of family and friends cooking out and spending time together. What I don’t picture are holidays such as National Apple Pie Day, National Armed Forces Day or National Lumpy Rug Day (yes, it’s real). There are so many lesser known holidays which means that we have been missing out on more chances to celebrate and have fun. I mean, for years I have lived through the third Friday in May not knowing that it was National Pizza Party Day. Who keeps that sort of information from people? Kinda makes you wonder what else we’ve been missing, right? Here are some fun ones hiding in the last six months of the year.

1. July 11th: National Cheer Up the Lonely Day

No one wants to be lonely. If you see someone you think needs a little company, go up and ask to join them. If they want to be left alone, respect their wishes and withdraw your company.

2. July 21st: National Junk Food Day

Finally, a day where I actually have a valid excuse to eat whatever I want and don’t have to fear judgment. Now where did I hide my Sour Patch Kids?

3. August 6th: National Fresh Breath Day

Every day should be fresh breath day. No doubt we have all been on the receiving side of having a conversation with someone who has bad breath. And more likely, we have all been on the guilty side of being the one with the bad breath. Toothpaste, friends. Toothpaste, mouth wash and floss are key. We don’t like to breath in toxic fumes and we doubt you do either. I suddenly feel the need to brush my teeth.

4. August 8th :National Sneak Some Zucchini Into Your Neighbor’s Porch Day

Don’t ask. Just shhhh; do it.

5. September 19th: National Talk Like A Pirate Day

OK, sure. Why not? Our throats will probably be aching from the forced gruffness but it’ll be worth it in the end.

6. September 29th: National Coffee Day

Aw yes. Technically, every day is coffee day. However, it is nice to have it nationally appreciated every now and again.

7. October 14th: National Be Bald and Be Free Day

Personally, I don’t plan on shaving my head. But if you are bald and you’re loving it: be bald and be free! No reason to feel insecure. You do you.

8. October 28th: National Breadstick Day

This is the perfect day to go on a first date to a restaurant where they serve breadsticks. That way, if the date just isn’t going as well as you’d hoped, you can stuff breadsticks into your purse or pockets or wherever and tell you’re date, “I have to leave immediately.”

9. November 6th: National Nacho Day

This can be read two ways. 1. National Nacho Day or 2. National Not Your Day; whatever works for you. Please nacho responsibly.

10. November 25th: National You’re Welcomegiving Day

Welcomegiving Day comes right after Thanksgiving Day. If there’s a day celebrated for being thankful and saying thank you then it only makes sense to celebrate a day of saying you’re welcome.

11. December 5th: International Ninja Day

A perfect day to practice your parkour skills. Though, if you have never attempted a flip off of a wall, as I myself have not, this is probably not your day.

12. December 8th: National Pretend to Be A Time Traveler Day

There have been stories on Tumblr and Facebook about people running into buildings and asking people what day and year it is before running off screaming “IT WORKED!” Turns out that there’s actually a day for that! But instead of doing it for the short span of five minutes, you have to keep it up all day. Best of luck.

13. December 18th: National Answer the Phone Like Buddy the Elf Day

Because why not? It’s getting close to Christmas time and people are usually in a good mood so go ahead and answer the phone and ask that person their favorite color. You deserve it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
