1. "How's college?"
Family members. Although they're most likely not all that interested in your everyday life, they'll ask you how your newfound college life has been so far. Whether or not you decide to include all the details is strictly up to you.
2. "Have you decided on a major yet?"
Unless you're an upperclassmen in college or have wanted to do the same thing since you were little, there's a good change you don't know what you want to major in, and that's okay! It's also completely okay to know what you want to do in your life. And it's also okay to answer "no" to this question.
3. "And how are you planning on using that major in the future? / What's your future job?"
Chances are, unless you answer the question above with an actual major, your relatives might keep this one hidden until later. However, it's also okay to have a major and not know what you want to get out of it yet! Just know that there's something out there for everyone - or else, they wouldn't be offering it as a major.
4. "Speaking of which, have you gotten a job or internship yet?"
If you haven't found that perfect research opportunity or that perfect internship yet, don't worry, ESPECIALLY if you are an underclassmen! There's still plenty of time to build your resumes and the best excuse for saying no to this question would be that you were just "adjusting to life alone on a college campus."
5. "Are you still with boyfriend/girlfriend?"
This question may make for some awkward interaction between family members, but just be brief and straight up about it, and there's a good chance they'll leave you alone.
6. "Oh. Any new boyfriends/girlfriends?"
Another awkward question for that holiday dinner you were looking forward to. Again, just be concise in your answers and they might leave you alone after this one.
7. "Tell me about your friends!"
Not exactly a question, but probably not something you'd want to talk about either. Just appeal to try to divert the attention to somewhere - or someone - else. You'll be okay, I promise.
8. "Have you been partying?"
And this is when you say, "No, mom. No, dad. I've been too bogged down with schoolwork to even leave my room!"
9. "Well, did you at least sleep/eat/exercise enough?"
Yes, mom. Yes, mom. Yes, mom. I promise I didn't skip any meals and got a full eight hours of sleep every day, all while balancing my academics and social life.
10. "Who did you vote for?"
Just avoid this one at. All. Costs. There's no way you can make everyone happy; so don't try to.
11. "How was finals week?"
How do you think it was?
12. "When do you go back to school?"
Not soon enough, mom and dad. Not soon enough.
