The 11 Stages of Writing (A Play)

A cycle of self deprecation and egocentrism.

Writers, you know the deal. Whether you specialize in prose, poetry, stage, or film, there’s always those magnificent, sky-bending highs and the life-purpose-questioning lows. (Everyone's had that time they cried in the shower, right? No? Just me?) Though I’ve recently gone through this process with a play, I’d argue that writing is very universal. Here are my ten highlights of the writing process.

1. The Brand New Idea

It’s comes to you in the weirdest place: mid laundry cycle, the eighteenth minute of your shower, Episode 11 of "Orange is the New Black." It feels so great, so new. You’re clearly a genius because you’ve just come up with the next big thing.

2. The First Ten Pages

You’ve got your coffee/tea/red bull at your side, your computer open, and the perfect background playlist. (Thanks, Spotify!) You, sir, are ready to write. The clacking of your keyboard sounds so official. By page ten, you’re all but preparing your Tony speech. Someone call Alicia Keys, ‘cause this thing is on FIYAH.

3. Mid-Point Block

The magic of those first ten pages have worn off and your tea exists in memory only. You're officially blocked. Lost. Everything you've written past page 30 is terrible. What happened to those sunny days of page one?

4. First Draft: DONE!

You move past the block and get it done! You did it, kid. You got all the way through your story! It feels good. You accomplished something.

5. Rewrite Until You Die

Fifth draft. Eighth draft. Twelfth draft. WHEN DOES IT END?!

6. Someone reads it, and loves it!

7. Someone reads it, and hates it.

8. Even More Rewrites

9. Final Draft

It’s time to call it quits. It’s not gonna get much better than this. (Whoa, that rhymed! Maybe my next endeavor should be songwriting? No? Okay.)

10. Set it Free

It’s performed, or you hide it in your closet, never to be read again. Either way, it's out of revision and you have to let it fly without you. (Unless you're me, then you'll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands.)

11. Lather, Rinse, Repeat

You do it all again, struggling to remember how in the world you accomplished it the first time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
