The Midwest is a stereotypical place to live. Some of the stereotypes you may know, some you may not. However, here in the Midwest, we don't like to call them stereotypes. These things make us who we are and we are proud to live in the greatest region in the best country in the world, the good old USA. Here are some of the things that make us Midwesterners unique.
1. You know going barefoot is the best thing in the world.
All Midwest folk know that the best part of Spring, Summer and Fall is going barefoot. There is no better feeling than the grass under your feet, water in between your toes or having the sun warm your feet.
2. You get offended when someone calls "cornhole," "bags."
This is the cardinal sin when it comes to Midwesterners. This game that is so sacred to us and our ancestors should be called by its proper name. It is played at tailgates, wedding receptions, for fun on the weekends, as a legitimate competition and at pretty much any kind of get together you can think of. It is not just a game, it's a way of life.
3. Fairs and festival season is your favorite time of the year.
The fair food, the concerts and the rides were a staple in all of our childhoods and even adulthood. There is nothing like sitting around with your friends listening to a local band or even a big name artist with a funnel cake and a lemon shake-up.
4. You never get upset when there is a tractor in front of you.
No matter where you go, what you're doing or how late you are you never get mad when you get stuck behind a tractor because you know that the farmers in them are putting food on your table and in your bellies, so you know to treat them with respect and not to honk at them.
5. You know to keep a hoodie, sweatpants, shorts and a T-shirt in your car at all times
Midwest weather is known for being unpredictable. It can rain in the morning, the sun could be shining at noon and by the time the evening rolls around it'll be freezing. Spring and fall are the two worst seasons in the Midwest because one day will be cold and one warms so you have your summer and winter clothes in your closet for at least a month.
6. Anytime someone asks you how far something is, you tell them in minutes instead of miles.
When asked where something is you respond, "It's about ten minutes up the road" instead of "It's about 10 miles up the road." I'm not sure where this came from, however everyone that I've met in the Midwest does it.
7. You wave at everyone you pass in the car and walking.
It is not uncommon to give everyone "the wave" when passing them while driving. When you go out of the house to go to the grocery store and pass someone it is inevitable that you will pass several people who you don't know.
8. You know what real humidity feels like.
Humidity in the Midwest is like walking through the gates of hell. All throughout the summer, girls and guys with curly hair can't wear their hair down because they look like a lion if they do. Your clothes stick to you everywhere and you sweat profusely.
9. Puppy chow is your favorite snack.
This treat is a delicacy in the Midwest, in elementary school when there was class parties a parent always made this. With Chex Mix, chocolate, peanut butter and powdered sugar, what's not to love?10. Lakes are our favorite thing to swim in.
There are no better days during the summer than sitting on a boat in the lake with a cold beer and friends. The lake is a place for relaxation, fun and memories.
While many of us hate being from The Midwest sometimes, we all know that we really do love it, and there's nothing that can change our minds about our customs. No matter where you go, if you're from the Midwest, you know these things for life.
