I have always been one of the tallest girls I know. Being tall comes with benefits and also challenges. Coming in at 5 feet 10 inches, I am no stranger to these benefits and challenges. Maybe after reading this list you will understand taller women a little bit better.
1. Do guys really grow in high school? Or even college?
Growing up, relatives were always telling me that the male gender would suddenly sprout in the teenage years. In high school, a few guys grew taller but most of them didn’t. This was pretty disappointing, but I didn’t let it discourage me from flirting with or talking to guys who were shorter than me.
2. The hell of shaving in small showers.
One of the worst parts of being tall as a woman is shaving legs in small showers. The shower turns into a small gymnastic act, every single time. Living in a dorm room, the shower is a decent size, but I still lift my leg to a decent height and basically do a standing split in the shower. Okay I am exaggerating, but I have experienced some pain from this. I have to remember to stretch before I shower.
3. Heels bring new heights.
For me it’s always interesting wearing high heels because it brings the eyes, heart, and spirit to new heights. Okay, maybe that’s a little much. But it literally adds height on top of height. You can either feel like a giant, or like you're on top of the world.
4. Can I wear heels to prom or will I be taller than my date?
This has never been a problem for me. If I want to wear heels and feel sexy, I am going to wear heels. At homecoming, winter formal, and prom I wore heels. At prom, my heels were pretty high. I was the same height as my date and that really didn’t bother me. It’s a fancy occasion, I don’t think I should have to wear flats or short heels if I want to wear high ones! But I know that many tall young women have had this thought and they may have made their shoe decision based on height of themselves and their dates.
5. How are these pants not long enough?
Pants shopping can be a struggle. Sometimes you find a great pair that fits great, and simply are not long enough. The problem is finding “long” pants is not always convenient and not every company carries “long” pants. I am mainly thinking of jeans. Jeans can always be difficult and we all have our own preferences.
6. I get it, I am tall.
It can be frustrating when people are constantly pointing out how tall you are. You just want to shake them and say, “I know I’m tall!” or “yes, I know, I have the height of an Amazon woman.”
7. When you hug a shorter person, your boobs are either in someone's face or on someone's head.
This is unbelievably true more often than not. My best friend is only 5 feet 1 inch and when I hug her, her head rests on my chest. I am used to this by now and I don’t mind it, but when I am hugging other people it can be a little strange.
8. None of these dresses cover my a**!
Similar to pants shopping, dress shopping brings new levels of stress. Buying long dresses is generally easier. But short dress shopping or cocktail dress shopping, especially at any modern and newer stores, the dresses are generally too short.
9. At least I don't have to worry about being picked last in gym class.
I was always really into sports and exercising, so this never bothered me. I enjoyed that someone else appreciated my height. But for those that aren’t as sporty, I can imagine this was a little frustrating. Also, it kind of makes us feel like all we are good for is our height, not our talent or our skill, but our height.
10. I am tall and I am proud.
I think in my pre-teen years and even in my teenage years I was insecure about my height. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to see the positive in being tall and being a woman. It’s time to celebrate being tall!
