We hear lectures in our classes every day, and sometimes it feels like we are always being forced to listen to someone talk at us. But every once in a while, if you listen carefully, people are saying some really awesome stuff. TED Talks cover a variety of topics with speakers from all over the world. A lot of their talks are relevant to 20 somethings and college students. Here are a few that we can learn something from.
1. How to Build Your Creative Confidence - David Kelley
In college, we are asked to do a lot of things we have never done before. One of those things might be to get creative for a project or outside of class project. Some people are afraid they aren't the "creative type" but Kelley gives us some ways to build our confidence to step outside of the box.
2. Try Something New for 30 Days - Matt Cutts
With class, work, extracurriculars and social lives, we sometimes fall into a routine that is hard to break. Cutts encourages us to try something new for 30 days and see what kind of impact it can have on our lives.
3. What Adults Can Learn From Kids - Adora Svitak
Now that we are in college, we are on the verge of "growing up." Child prodigy, Adora Svitak, asks us to think more like a child, meaning keeping our sense of creativity and optimism alive and dream big.
4. The Surprising Science of Happiness - Dan Gilbert
Gilbert gives us the science behind our emotions and tells us that what we feel is mostly up to us. So even when things aren't going our way, we can choose to be happy.
5. Everyday Leadership - Drew Dudley
Sometimes we forget to give ourselves credit for the things we do every day that make us leaders. You don't have to change the world to change someone's life, you have the power to make someone's life better every day.
6. How to Find Work That You Love - Scott Dinsmore
College students are constantly doing things "to build our resume." But what happens when those resume building jobs aren't really making us happy. Dinsmore's talk is perfect for any college students readying themselves for after graduation.
7. Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are - Amy Cuddy
Cuddy asks us to examine our posture. Are we hunched over and closed off or wide spread and sitting tall with confidence? Our body language is important to how others perceive us and how feel about ourselves.
8. 5 Ways to Listen Better - Julian Treasure
As college students, we have to listen constantly. But sometimes it seems like information goes in one ear and out the other. Treasure's TED Talk gives some tips for active listening.
9. The Hidden Power of Smiling - Ron Gutman
Did you know that we are born smiling? Some studies have shown that smiling can help you live longer. Gutman reminds us just how important it is to smile as much as we can.
10. Dance Your PhD - John Bohannon & Black Label Movement
Finally, my favorite TED Talk of all time. Bohannon shows that we can find creative ways to learn new information and use art as a tool for math and science learning.
