If you are a theater student you understand. You get your audition time, you prepare your monologue or song, you assemble that perfect not-awkward-at-all headshot and resume, and then you show up and do your thing. And then you wait. And wait. And wait. And for the next few days, you do nothing but check your phone to see if there is any news about when the list might show up. You might try to distract yourself by hanging out with friends or doing other work, but the entire time you are going through all of the outcomes in the back of your mind: I could have said this better, I should have made bigger choices, what if they hated my dress, did I forget to slate, did I say thank you? Those days are a ball of stress and overthinking. So here is a list of 10 reasons why waiting for cast lists is just the worst:
1. You check your phone and email every 30 seconds because you might have missed some “important message or text”.
2. You go over every second of the audition in your mind to reassure yourself that you didn’t totally suck.
3. You ask any and all theater students if they know any information about the lists coming out, but usually everyone is on same page as you.
4. You make sure to go out of your way to be nice if you happen to run into one of the directors on campus.
5. You look over your schedule and all of your homework and stress about how much rehearsal time you might have and how that’s going to affect your studying.
6. You question yourself as an artist.
7. You try and have low expectations so you can’t be disappointed if you don’t get any parts, although it hardly ever works.
8. You tell yourself that rejection is an inevitable part of being an actor, although it’s the worst part.
9. You realize that your acting professor might have had some good points by making you repeat the saying, “I am enough”. Because no matter the results, you are enough.
10. But in the end you are really just excited to see the results and you’ll be happy with whatever happens because the directors always choose the best person for the role, and the shows will be fantastic.
